crazy for Planning for a June 9, 2012 wedding?

Everytime i tell someone my wedding date (6/9/2012) and what i have planned already, they have looked at me like i'm crazy. The stuff that i have done already is set the venue, the church, the deacon who is marrying us, and my dress. is that crazy that i have done these things already. i knew i wanted to have a long engagement bc i didn't want to be stressed throughout my engagement. i wanted to enjoy it and take my time planning stuff. i wanted to get the biggest stuff out of the way, but when i talk to people about my wedding they look at me like i'm crazy for the stuff i've done. am i crazy?

Re: crazy for Planning for a June 9, 2012 wedding?

  • No you aren't crazy at all!!!  I wanted a long engagement for the same reason as you and I already have most of my vendors in place as well.  But I get some people telling me it's so far away.  I just smile at them...and then keep right on planning!!!  LOL

  • You definitely are not crazy!!  We wanted a long engagement to be able to save money but also so that we could plan enough in advance to get everything we want :)  Some people have told us we're crazy, but we're perfectly happy with what we're doing so my theory has become to just ignore it because I love planning and oddly enough so does my FI!! :)
  • No, you're not crazy :-) That's exactly why I'm having a long engagement too so we're not dropping tons of money down at once and can actually cushion ourselves.

I personally have booked my venue and photographer. I ordered place cards and return address labels for my future invites and thank you cards yesterday off Vistaprint :-P

Depending on where you live, the early bird gets first pick on things- I was the first 2012 date at my venue, the coordinator didn't even have a 2012 calendar yet!

  • No you're not crazy! People who aren't planning a wedding just don't understand how fast things book up.
  • You are def not crazy!
    so far we have:
    our Ceremony site
    recept site
    photographer
    DJ
    my dress & shoes
    some DYI projects started
    invites/monogram started
    guest list almost finalized
FI has already looked into honeymoon spots

I just figure the more we can do now the less stressed we'll be later. Smile
  • You are definitely not crazy.  We need to plan our wedding early on because I'll be really busy with grad school stuff in the few months beforehand.  So far we have our venue (ceremony and reception), photographer, DJ, officiant, and ideas on what we are doing for just about everything (mostly DIY).

  • To repeat, no you aren't crazy. I wanted to give us enough time financially and to not be stressed.  And like someone else said, the early bird gets the worm. I have gotten every vendor so far that I wanted.

    So far we have:
church, reception venue, dress/shoes, photographer, DJ, baker, caterer, some DIY projects, ceremony musicians

  • Most people don't realize how much goes in to planning a wedding.  I think you are right on track and there is no harm or craziness in getting checks on the list early.
  • I have to agree; I don't think you're crazy at all. :) I'd like to get my venue set, but I'm waiting til summer when my life isn't quite so hectic.

  • Are you getting married in Houston? Or does the Knot just put that as your location? Because if you are in a big city its even less crazy that you are planning this early! Personally I wanted to get a bunch of stuff taken care of when I was unemployed looking for a job after I graduated. Now that I have a job that I am crazy busy with (except today cause I took a sick day.) I have way less time to look at wedding things.

We are getting married in Northern Philadelphia and I am now starting to get vendors that tell me others are looking at my date. June is a popular month!

We have the ceremony/reception venue, photographer, DJ, Hair and Makeup people and My dress/veil. I am working on Florist and ceremony musicians now. Its never too early. Unless a vendor doesnt book until a year out (the videodrapher i want does this). But you can know who you want and get it the earlier you are! AND no stressing later :) HTH

  • My fiance and I have the same date picked out and we already have the Church, Pastor, Wedding Party (well most of it), the Dress, the photographer and dj (both friends), and the colors picked out. I'm working diligently on a reception hall, so that'll be coming soon too. You are not crazy. You are excited and I totally agree with the not stressing yourself out thing. I am so in that boat.

  • No! I don't even consider from now until June 2012 a long engagement. We have a couple we are friends with that have been engaged for over 3 years. That's a long engagement. I read somewhere that the average length of couples' engagements is like 15 months. My FI and I will be engaged for 16 months when we get married, but the reason we wanted it like that is mainly because we knew it usually takes about a year to get everything planned. We also knew we wanted a summer wedding and it would be near impossible to get all that done in 4 or 5 months. This length of time let's you enjoy your planning and not be rushed and stressed out. Don't listen to others...

  • OMG! People are so dumb when it comes to this! You're not crazy at all. Everyone telling you that you have a long time is crazy. My DJ is booked solid for the month of June in 2012, my venue is booked every Saturday and my same for my photog. I wanted a longer engagement so I could have first dibbs on all the good stuff (and because my parents are celebrating their 25th and my gparents their 50th).

  • You are totally crazy!!!

Not! I think people just don't realize how fast things book in the summers. I would just tell them that they are the crazy ones! ;)

  • I agree with what everyone else said - defiantly not crazy!

  • Not crazy at all. I've already started planning and booking stuff.  We have almost our whole honeymoon planned out, we cant book that yet.  But weddings cost money and some people have to save..One of my friends thought it was crazy I went to a bridal show, and been looking a bridal books she said I wont even need my dress til next year since my weddings n ot until next June, I told her ya right I'll have my dress this summer.
  • You are not remotely crazy.  Weddings are planned around 9-12 months out, but that's just the average - lots of people nowadays plan long ahead of that to ensure they can have the wedding they want, not to mention the savings to pay for it.

It also depends on the age of the people you're talking to.  I know people in my grandparents' generation often planned in closer to 3-6 months, and my parents more in 8-9 months.  My mother is still entirely oblivious to exactly what goes into planning a wedding these days, and is often taken completely aback by what things cost and how far ahead they have to be planned!

  • You are definitely not crazy!  So far we have: ceremony/venue site, photographer and officiant.  I'll start dress shopping next month after I finish grad school.  I want to be as stress free as possible and getting startedf early is the best way to do it!

  • You are soooo NOT crazy!!!  You ARE however, ON THE BALL and about taking care of business.  I got engaged 12/31/2010 and my wedding date is 6/9/2012.  I wanted to be a June bride and my little sister is getting married this year in July.  So my fiance' and I opted to wait as to not upstage her moment.  We knew we wanted to have a long engagement because there were certain things we wanted that were not up for compromise.  I too, have booke my venue, wedding planner, florist, photographer/ videographer, cakes, and bought my dress.  I must say I am thrilled to be in such great company of brides who get the job done.  This time next year we will be set and just waiting on the day to come.  I knew I didn't want to be so stressed and unable to enjoy this journey.  I also didn't want to have to stop "living" just because I'm getting maaried.  My fiance' and I like to travel and we did't want to have to pass on trips because we were planning a wedding.  Rest assured honey that you are not crazy and know that there are alot of other brides out there just like you.  Smile  Good Luck and Congrats!

  • I'm in agreement that you are NOT crazy. I too thought I was crazy because I started planning in January. I got engaged Dec.25 and we have an engagement party planned for June that i am helping my parents with. It was easier to plan for my wedding than anything else.

I have my wedding coordinator, venue, ceremony, and photographer. It makes it easy on the stress level when you plan early.

    Happy Planning.

  • if you're crazy than so am i (same date) and so is everyone else in NJ. the first place i went to see for our reception had 1 day left in june, 2 in july, and 2 for aug of 2012 (over 14 months out). i have our ceremony & reception sites set, which i wanted to do right away so i could get what i wanted. my thoughts: the longer you have to plan, the better chance you have of getting everything right! enjoy!
  • You're not crazy, we origially got engaged in August 2009, planned a wedding for 2011 and had the church, venue, photograhy, dj, and videographer all booked 2 years in advance...we postponed to 2012 and still have the church and venue booked.  I would have gotten my dress but I was pregnant and am just ready to start looking now that I am back to my PP weight :)

  • I agree with everyone else! I have already came across some vendors that are already booked for June of next year... so imagine how much worse it will get if you wait forever to do this stuff! Keep doing what YOU feel is right! Its YOUR wedding! :)

  • I agree with everyone here that says you're not crazy!! I'm a June 2, 2012 bride and I have started planning as well...only thing holding me back at this point is my father checking on the venue for me! I'm normally a huge procrastinator so I am trying to get over that obstacle with planning the wedding..on top of that...need to save $$$!!! It's less stressful to plan waaaayyy ahead in my opinion!
