I registered for a 1/2 marathon

I just had to share since I'm so excited. I registered for a 1/2 Marathon and I'm so excited. I finally found the something that will help motivate me to workout everyday. I start training Sunday and the marathon is in October! This will be my first marathon but if this one goes good then I will try to do two a year. I can also help raise money for a sick kids which is awesome! Anyone ever do a marathon? Any advise?

Re: I registered for a 1/2 marathon

  • I have had lots of friends who have (and I am training for my first one) they say to make sure to follow the schedule that they provide. The week before do not run (or just 1 day and only a couple of miles) YOU WILL BE SORE after words. Most of my friends have had massages after words and that seemed to help. But most of all, ENJOY IT! :)

  • Congrats!! I love running; I have done many 5k's, 10k's and and one 1/2 marathon. I would like to do more but can't with my work schedule.

Advice? Don't get frustrated if you have one bad day of training. Training for a 1/2 marathon is a huge task and it can get overwhelming.

  • I just did my first one in April. It is a GREAT way to get in shape! I didnt lose weight bc my body doesnt work that way, but i lost inches from my legs and love handles. My biggest tip is to stick to the training. I missed a day here and there but it really helped me feel confident and prepared bc i knew i had done all the training runs. If you can find a running buddy it helps a lot! You can motiviate each other when neither of you feel like running. I encouraged my budy while we were running bc it encouraged me to tell her we could make it.
When i acutally did the race it was really hot, so it was not the best experience, but i plan on doing one in October and then again in April.
    Good luck and have fun!!

  • I don't have any advice since I avoid running and most physical activity at all costs; but good luck!  This will be such a great accomplishment and its fantastic that you can raise money for lots of causes with it!

  • That's awesome! I also have no advice though. I generally don't run. I'll do walks but that's about it. And I used to play soccer. Good luck though!
  • That's awesome.  No advice here either, but best wishes to you!

  • I'm so excited for you! I did my first half marathon last year and training got me into the best shape of my life.

My best advice is to tell everyone around you that you're going to do the marathon. That way those people hold you somewhat accountable. I told all my friends and family before I did my first one and then when I would have a bad day or week training and want to quit I would just think about all the people I would have to admit that I was quitting to. It was great motivation to keep going!

Let us know how everything goes!

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice and support.
  • I just did my first one in February! Good luck! Definitely try to have someone hold you accountable. Train on both a treadmill and road. Majority road though. I hate treadmills but they did help me in training.

  • I have done 2 full marathons, and a few halves, the next one being on Saturday. My biggest piece of advice would be realize that when distance running, its 30% physical, 70% Mental. Push. Push hard, and when you think you can't go any further TELL YOUR SELF that you can... make your body believe your brain.

Some of it will hurt, but its the most rewarding thing
