June 2012 Weddings

What's your fun/unique wedding detail?

I love how people's personalities come out at weddings. Did you create some kind of a special touch?

Ours is a wedding newspaper. It is a Latvian tradition to make a funny newspaper that appears to be a real one at first. Inside are witty articles about the couple, funny fake classifieds, a made up weather report (..the atmosphere will be cool and might bring light showers of compliments towards the evening..), an entertainment page with movie reviews where the actor's faces and names have been replaced by family members.. all in all it's humorous! and it makes a sweet keepsake. We have been working on it for a while and it's coming together just great :)

    That sounds really neat!

We just have a lot of handmade things... I made tons of floral fabric and burlap flowers for the centerpieces. We are also having a special portion in our ceremony to honor our loved ones who have died.

  • We are having a Champions sendoff. Think Championship parade in the home city after they've one the Super Cowl/World Series etc. We made pennants and streamers. Should be great for pictures!

I don't know that it's "fun" but our ceremony is definitely very unusual. We are self-uniting-no officiant, we get to declare ourselves husband and wife. We are writing our entire ceremony, and doing two unusual readings-one from Pride & Prejudice, and one from a Milan Kundera book.

OMG I love this! It's funny, when our officiant was reading us what he had written, he had mentioned he loved including quotes from literature and I almost asked him to include something from P&P!! Which part are you using??

I'm not sure whether we're doing anything too crazy, but we are making the wine box for the ceremony, FI painted the guestbook tree and I made the pomanders...we picked some items to DIT and I think that represents us.

  • My favorite detail I think are the invites. They were grey with a light yellow deer standing in grass, with really artistic looking antlers, and the backside had a closer shot of the antlers. We're super outdoorsy and getting married at an elk farm so it was really fitting. We've gotten a ton of compliments on them (thank you, vistaprint!)

  • I love love love my card box and I know - one person shouldn't be so damn excited but I just am! I had the florist decorate it and they offered it for free because it's on display in their store and they've had a bunch of orders for them.

So - we ordered a birdcage from Amazon and the florists put these two gorgeous peacocks on top of the cage with tails cascading down the sides. The florist's wife took a large piece of flexible fabric and painted a layer of glue and put layers of tiny peacock feathers all around and they're wrapping it around the cage. There's a "moss" at the bottom of the cage and a card for the band that has our names, wedding date and gift cards printed on a vintage piece of cardstock/damask paper.

I adore how this is looking! My escort cards are teathers with the guests names printed on them so it is turning out beautifully!

  • Your idea sounds so totally cute!

I guess our little detail is feathers...yes...feathers.

I have this weird facination with birds for some reason. I keep unintentionally decorating things with a bird theme. My daughters nursery is a peacock theme, I have bird feeders all over my yard...and for my wedding we're having ostrich plume and pheasant feather centerpieces and decorations. My bouquet has feathers, etc. It's different and pretty (to me at least!)

[QUOTE]We are doing a few things I thought were a little special: We are having a daily news letter delivered to each guests hotel room every morning complete with news, activities, entertainment, cross word, and weather. Similar to your newspaper, but a much thinner daily version. At the reception, there is an entrance area for the guests to arrive- outside this area, is an awning. We are going to have a red carpet leading into the entrance. Now the entrance area is about 12 x 12. There will be an usher who will act as a bouncer lol, he will only let one couple at a time enter through the velvet curtain. Beyond this velvet curtain is a 4.5' wide by about 35' long hall. In this hall, we are going to have the following song playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ab1l2TwFp8 (keep in mind this is a reception in TX after a wedding in Hawaii- so this music we felt brings a bit of the ambiance to the beginning of the reception) Once in this hall, FI and I have been making origami butterflies, hundreds- thousands by the time we are done, and we are going to be stringing them from the high ceiling of the hall. On the walls which are 5' high mahogany panels, we are going to post, poems, short sayings, photos, what butterflie mean to us, and a note of how much the guests presence means to us on this special day. At the end of the hall will be our sign in station with another usher who will radio to usher #1 when the guest reaches the sign in station. Our sign in table will have the typical stuff, additionally, we will have a calendar we made of Kauai and have everyone sign their name on their birthday. We will be displaying photos of those that are no longer with us in body, but always in our hearts in spirit. For our seating chart, we are trying to get wedding photos of everyone married, and photos of all the guests that are not yet married. These photos will be framed with their names and hung from a curtain rod on a "dummy wall" we are making. At the top of the rod will be a picture frame with a year number in it, a ribbon will tie and hang all of the photos of the people at the table number of that year. On our tables, the numbers will be photos of FI and I during that year. ex pics of us during 1995, 1983, ..... This is our plan and hope, but we are trying to get all the pictures of our guests in order. That is the challenging part lol. :) After our wedding ceremony, we are releasing skylanterns with blessings written on them :) Our wedding dance!!! FI and I are doing a waltz followed by a swing dance with lots of airal flips. I am changing into another dress to be able to do this. The Girls Dance (So excited about this) My FI wanted to do a "Guys Dance" so of course the girls have to do a dance too. Well with a twist ;) FI LOVES flash mobs! He thinks they are the coolest thing. So My bridesmaids and I 3 in total, are going to begin our dance, after we complete the first full verse or round what ever you call it, then, ALL of the WOMEN at the wedding actually join in like a FLASH MOB!!! :) I know he will love it. The girls dance is to "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" :) There are a lot of little details that I love about our plan- it's now making me excited thinking about it :) Yay! :)

  • I think our location and guestbook are are most fun/unique wedding details.

We are actually getting married at an outdoor amphitheater and the reception will be at a campground at this huge wooden cabin pavilion thing. It's awesome.. very unique.

Our Guestbook is a "Message in a Bottle" We got a 5 bottle wine rack and put different anniversary dates on it... Newlyweds, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years and 20. People can leave us a note on a card we made that says "Leave Well Wished for the Mr. & Mrs." or they can fill out a madlib. I can't wait to open them years from now.
  • oooh, I love the wine bottle idea a lot! in our house that would keep better than a wishing tree, I' m thinking. I might steal the concept if you don't mind!
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I have a lot of details for the wedding but I guess the more unique thing is the seating 'cards' which aren't cards but are origami flowers. It's the only thing I had help with as I was getting really tired of folding each petal. I had ex co-workers gather people at one of their houses and had a folding party. I was very appreciative of that.

My guestbook is an advice box for advice cards with some fun flower pens. I figured I'd rather keep the cards then a bunch of signatures in a book.
