Grammar

Re: Grammar

  • Jaschelle, it was just a guess as to who voted "Get off your high horse" and I was wrong in your case. No harm no foul.

I don't expect anyone to use MLA format on a message board but knowing when it's appropriate to use capital letters and the differences between things such as they're, their and there are important for survival in everyday life.

We don't get to actually converse with each other so our written word is pretty important. Clearly I'm not alone in thinking this and posters who pay no attention to their spelling and grammar should be made aware of this feeling of our little community.

I would hope so too! I also know a lot of people haven't received the same education I have, and that they may not know the difference. Sometimes correcting them can be beneficial, maybe they can actually learn from it.

Exactly. Which is the only reason I correct people. So why did you vote "get over yourself"?

Because for the most part, they're not. They CAN be, but IMO not many people like stuff like that to be pointed out to them, expecially in public. I'm not offended that you do it, but I can see how it could embarrass people. I knot at work, and most of the time quickly. I know I make mistakes. I would feeling like a fuucking idiot if they kept getting brought to my attention though.
  • Gotcha. I was just curious.

So no Dani, I don't forsee this post causing problems. Stranger things have happened here though.

  • I'm a grammar snob, and cannot stand what the internet is doing to language. If I read "lyke" for "like" one more time, I may cry. I can kind of get on board for 'u'/'you', because it is shorter. Lyke/like? Same amount of letters!

  • I think it`s a little obnoxious to be constantly pointing out grammar or composition issues. Sure it may be annoying, but not everyone on here may speak english as a first language, or maybe the person you are correcting has a learning disability perhaps?

I was an English major in university and my grammar, spelling and writing is far from perfect. I have a hard time expressing myself in writing at times as well.

Most people who make grammar mistakes know they struggle with the issue and don't need it pointed out to them constantly online. Unless you are typing "lyke dis" and purposely spelling things wrong, I don't think it should be such an issue....

I'm just tired of all the drama and how people seem to be getting offended all the time.

  • I find bad grammar annoying, but I am an English teacher.  I also didn't know whether to go by being someone "not everyone knows" or "been around forever."  I've been posting on this board for over a year, but not near with the frequency of some of you ladies!
  • Tara, if you haven't voted, I'd say go with the "been around forever". :)

  • I voted for "No, what's grammar", but only because no one else did. I thought it might be lonely.

In all seriousness, I don't get annoyed with grammar until it's so bad that I can't even understand the point of the sentence/post. I feel like everyone has their own pet peeves. People who don't know how to flippin drive bother me more than bad grammar.
