Pre-Cana Part 1

FI and I went to the first part of our pre-cana session. Ours is divided between tonight (3 hours) and tomorrow (7 hours). To say the least, I'm not happy. I'm not an overly religious person, I do believe in God, but I didn't really like some of the videos that we watched. They need to be updated, first of all, but they were very God-centered instead of being about the relationship and making it work. On top of the annoying movie segments, we were let out a half our late tonight. There was no reason for it, plus we're back there for another SEVEN HOURS tomorrow. (The other session last month was one day for 8 hours so I really don't understand why ours is two hours longer.) It annoyed me because it's a Friday and most people worked a full day and it started around dinner time for most. They only served chips (real healthy) and water and so I was running on junk. Not looking forward to tomorrow.

Re: Pre-Cana Part 1

  • This makes me glad i am doing my pre-cana privately. I have never heard of watching videos. Giving up both a friday night & saturday does suck that's for sure. Just think of the positive though, after tomorrow you are done right?

  • Sorry you're not enjoying your experience, we loved our pre cana. And, not to sound like a jerk, but if it's run through the Church why wouldn't it be God centered? Maybe today will be more of what you're expecting.

  • If you feel like the pre-Cana doesn't provide you enough marriage support, I really recommend doing secular couples therapy. I posted about it a couple days ago.
  • I am sorry its not what you were hoping for.  If you don't end up getting out of it what you wanted/needed I would recomend an engaged encounter weekend.  It was overly centered on faith and I think it really helped us and gave us time to talk about issues we normally wouldn't.

It is a bit long as its the whole weekend from 7:30PM Friday until about 3PM Sunday but we really enjoyed it.  Bot sure how willing you will be to do this after you have completed your requirements but just wanted to through it out there.  The only video we watched was on NFP.

  • Thanks for the support, ladies. Today was more videos and worksheets and boredom. I wish ours was private, that would have been much more enjoyable. FI and I aren't looking for couples therapy. I know it's run by the church and should involve God, but the people speaking focused so much on God being present in every part of the marriage instead of focusing on the actual relationship of the two people entering into marriage.

To be honest, we only did the pre-cana so we could get married Catholic, since we're both baptized and confirmed in the religion. FI practices more than I do, I don't attend church except on holidays/special occassions and I prefer to pray on my own time in my own home. But, I just think that the program we did was poor executed.
