June 2012 Weddings

Been painting for a week and have fun photos to share!

About a year ago, I got it in my head that I'd paint personalized corn hole boards for our wedding. I saw them once...and they have since popped up at weddings left and right.  Still, I decided to carry on with the plan.

I started this project a week ago, using a borrowed LCD projector to project a picture on boards I bought unfinished.  I traced the flowers with pencil, then made a few changes here and there until I liked how it looked.  I painted with a tiny brush almost every day for a week (with three days off for Christmas) and added our monogram yesterday.

I'm going to put a poly coat on them next weekend. I'm hoping to make the chair signs match...but I'll have to adapt the design to fit.

I'm so happy with how my color scheme is working...bridesmaid dresses, table numbers, ring bearer boutonnieres...it's all coming together!

  • Wow. That's really impressive.
  • Those are great. I am jealous. I don't have any kind of artistic talent.
  • Those are gorgeous!

  • Everything you make is awesome. Nothing looks "craftsy" DIY, if you know what I mean.

  • Oh, I'm not artistic!  Without the LCD projector, I would have been sunk.  I cobbled the ring of flowers together using MS Paint to cut and paste flowers from a few sources together.  I don't even know how to use Photoshop!

I traced everything very slowly and then sat in front of those boards for hours each day with paints (the $1.29 ones from Michaels) and little brushes.

    Posted by diamondx423
Aw, thanks!  I've come a long way in recent years.

I had a roommate in college who had been an RA and she was so crafty.  She could take a box made out of craft paper and make it look like a jewelry box in an hour.  I didn't even know what most of the aisles in Michaels were for back then!

For anyone interested in doing anything like this who doesn't have an LCD projector, it's actually really easy!

Paint your wood (or prepare your poster or cardboard or whatever you're using), making sure your color is quite light, and not a shade of gray (or a very light shade of gray)
    Print out your design
Scribble over the BACK of the paper with a pencil, making sure to cover the entire design
Tape design in place on the wood (or whatever you're using)
Trace over design with a pen, using a decent amount of pressure

Voila!  You've transferred the design easily, you can paint it in, and you can erase the lines at any point.  I've used it to make signs for myself and my family many times, and I'm not a terribly artistic person either!

    Posted by DrPB2b13
I did that to make my moss covered letters...I traced letters that I blew up.  I used a sharpie and after three passes, the ink started to bleed through very lightly.

It's a lawn game.  I never saw it before visiting friends in Ohio about 5-6 years ago.  People there would haul their boards to football games and play in the parking lot!

Anyway, it's simple toss game played with bean bags and two boards with holes in them.

Here are some college kids playing: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzCgCywSEaI" rel="nofollow">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzCgCywSEaI</a>

"Speaking" of crafts, what happened with the shoot?  Did the article run yet?

  • Ah, the wedding issue came out a couple weeks ago.  They only published two of the three projects I did for them (though in the print edition, they said three projects, but only showed two...it's corrected online).

The moss letter I did on the spot was wonky looking.  The picture of me is horrible. :)

Interesting experience, but it felt very rushed.

I responded yesterday and I guess my message didn't post.

The issue came out a couple weeks ago. The picture of me is terrible, but I was rushed getting ready, so I wasn't surprised. They also wrote that they were showing three projects in the print issue, but there were only two. They corrected that for the online version.

To be fair, the editor is planning a wedding herself while working on her Masters and training for the summer Olympics. She also has a wedding blog! She's doing an incredible amount of work.

    Heres the online version: <a href="http://www.readthehook.com/specials" rel="nofollow">http://www.readthehook.com/specials</a>
