Wedding dress opinion. (pics)

Sorry for two posts all at once. I am at work and am bored. :)

I have already purchased my dress. We are haveing an outdoor wedding, and an outdoor reception.

I am thinking my dress is a little too formal for what I am envisioning. I am thinking we can alter it though. I haven't talked to the seamstress since I bought it, and will do that when our wedding gets closer. I would like to see what you guys think.

I would like to make it a knee length dress and take out some of the poof.

Keep in mind the dress is a little big and I am standing weird because the straps are odd.

I don't like the back, how it poofs out, I wonder if she can fix that?

The back will be criss-crossed like this, but closer together at the bottom of the "V".

I would love to have the straps thin and kind of beaded, since they won't be used for much support, my dress will be tighter and held up that way.

I am just brainstorming at the moment. What are your opinions?

  • You look lovely in that dress!  I think it's gorgeous the way it is.  I will admit though, I love poofy wedding dresses, and I have never seriously considered a wedding dress for myself that's not a traditional length.

I think the way the back poofs out will change A LOT if it's knee-length, possibly to the point where you don't feel it requires much more alteration.  The way it is in that picture, it's being supported by the floor - that is, any stiffer materials are going to be able to stand straight up and/or be pulled outwards and stay there.  Once it's knee-length, everything is going to hang down, and it will look much different.

  • I say don't change it. If you really want that many alterations I'd just get a second dress because it's going to cost a lot for your alterations.

<div>I take it you made the choice to have it outside instead of in the hall, is that final? No one says you can't have the puffy dress just because venue changes. I would think long and hard and talk to the seamstress and get a paper quote before changing things that can not be fixed (knee length) and if you are really set on the idea after a couple months then do it, or sell the dress and buy another one more your new vision.</div>

  • I think the dress is gorgeous and I especially love the front of it on you. It seems to fit you very well. The back poof part does seem a little much as you suggested but I don't know if I'd want to take it all the way to knee length. I know nothing about sewing and how alterations affect the way fabric lays so I would consult a seamstress about it. Ask her any questions you have no matter how silly you think they are because you never know what could affect the way the dress looks. It might change a feature you love about the dress.

I like the straps you suggested, they would be an little extra something on the dress. They'd work well because the dress is so simple, which I love.

    Keep us posted!

<div>A agree with Katelyn.  You're looking to change the structure of the dress rather then make small alterations.  I don't think that dress <em>needs </em>to be changed at all for an outdoor wedding and reception.  It looks beautiful and I actually really like the straps as they are.  If you're looking for something COMPLETELY different, then I'd say get rid of that dress and get a new dress.  Or maybe if it's in your budget you could get a knee length reception dress.</div>
  • I agree with PPs. Your changing the fundamentals of the dress. It seems the only thing you want to keep is the top front part.

Just get a new dress. Sell that one. It'll be cheaper and you may end up finding one that you don't want to change a thing on.
  • I agree with PP's...that dress look beautiful on you and I think it would be perfectly fine for an outdoor wedding!
  • I don't think it's too formal, and by the time you'd pay for all the alterations to make it a shorter dress- you may as well have bought a new dress.

  • I wouldn't change the length. I think it looks gorgeous on you the way it is! I do like what you want to do with the straps though... I think it will give the dress that extra sort of flair to fit your style.

My vote is to keep the length, but do the strap alteration.

  • I really love that dress just the way it is, but similar to DrPB I love poofy dresses.  As PPs have mentioned, it seems that what you really want is a completely different dress since the only thing you don't want to change is the top front section.  I think you could probably find a second dress more in-line with you vision; maybe even consider looking at secondhand dresses?  It also may be cheaper to resell your original dress and have the one you want made since you seem to know exactly what you want it to look like.

Good luck with this and I'm glad to see you made the decision about the outdoor location vs the ballroom!

  • I think the dress would be fine for an outdoor wedding just as it is.  It looks great on you!  Is the dress your wearing in the pic pinned back?  In that case maybe when you get your dress (sized properly for you) it won't be as big/poofy...?  They can definitely take out some of the material underneath and make it less poofy, but I agree with the others that if you're shortening and changing the straps alterations are going to be expensive and you may just want to just buy a new dress.

  • congrats on making your venue decision!!  i am having an outdoor ceremony and have a long dress with a moderate train.  i think that just because it is outdoors doesn't mean you can't have a floor length dress, BUT like PPs, it seems like you want a different dress.  i also agree with the strap change and what about taking out some of the poof before deciding to chop off the length?  like everything else, YOU have to be the one to love wearing it at the end of the day.

Thnaks ladies! I really needed your opinion! :D I think I will look for a new dress. I am not sure yet. I have some thinking to do. I do agree that I shouldn't change too much of it.
