Unexpected gift

As some of you may know, I work at the front desk of a hotel.

We have a regular lady that is very wealthy, who comes to visit her grandson. She mentioned that her grandson wanted a Dyson and it some how came out that I was getting married. She was all excited and asked where we were registered and made me write it down. I told her that I would kick her butt if she bought the Dyson! haha. We talked for a little longer and she went up to her room. A little while later, came down and gave me a check. I couldn't look at it right away because I was helping another guest, but she wrote it out for $200!!! I wanted to cry! She is such a sweet lady. I called her room right away and thanked her. She made my day! :)

PS~ Does anyone else feel guilty when someone does such nice things for you? I am that kind of person.

  • WOW!  That was very sweet of her!  I'm the same with with feeling guilty about people doing things for me.
  • I am TOTALLY that kind of person, too!  That's super nice of her though!

  • How sweet of her!! Things like that make me feel guilty too, but at the same time I know that I would love to do that for people if I were financially able to. I'm sure it made her happy, too :)
  • that is sweet. I dont think we can accept gifts like that at work, but outside work maybe? I work for a major chain though. I would be floored too.

  • Fawn that is amazing!!! I know you know but I would be writing the most thoughtful thank you note I could muster! Bonnie I feel like they have gotten to know each other and it was an amicable gift unrelated to work. I could be wrong though.

Ditto this and Abbe :)  That's awesome!
  • That is awesome! I love generous people. It makes me wish I was still working at HD...I had quite a few regulars who loved me to pieces.

Bonnie, I understand where you're coming from because we always had to be discrete about customers giving us money at HD for helping them out to their car or whatnot. It was technically against the rules, but as long as you didn't let management know it was fine. I also feel like they have a personal relationship that goes beyond the hotel relationship. It may have been risky for the customer to do it right there at the desk, but meh. It worked.
  • I am still shocked today! I haven't cashed it yet and every time I see it in my purse, it makes me smile.

Bonnie- It isn't against the rules for us. We are allowed to accept tips and whatever else someone wants to give us. My manager is all for it. :)
Are you not allowed to accept tips? If not, that would be pretty shitty. The housekeepers can accept tips, why not the front desk?
