dance lessons?

Hey guys!  FI and I have been considering possibly getting dance lessons for our first dance.  Kinda nervous about it, strangely.  FI isn't 100% sold but he really doesn't want to look like a fool for that dance either.

How many of you are doing dance lessons?  Have you started them yet?  Is it hard/weird/awkward?  Haha..

Also, on a more personal level.. how much are you paying if you are?  Do you think it's worth it?

Re: dance lessons?

  • We are definitely doing them but don't have them booked yet :/ keep putting them off lol
  • We aren't. Me being a dancer you would think I would want a choreographed dance, but I don't. Plus, FI wouldn't do it anyways. Haha. We're just gonna do the whole 8th grade slow dance thing, but I might have him spin and dip me at some point in it. I do think dance lessons are a fun activity to do with FI, and I wouldn't mind doing it just to spend some time together.

  • We considered it, but I don't think we're going to. FI is a wonderful dancer, and I want to do a simple slow dance instead of doing some crazy moves...we can save that for the rest of the reception! I'm sure we'll practice a few dips and spins though.
  • we aren't getting them. They aren't high on our priority list.

  • We are doing them. Even my dad and I are taking them. We are not paying for them though. My old skating coach is a professional ballroom dancer and has kindly offered to teach us for a wedding present. We start them the beginning of Feb. I'm really excited. FI is too....he doesn't want my dad to show him up and he doesn't want to look like a fool on our first dance. But I am told we have to do something cool :)

This is us, exactly. We're just planning on swaying back and forth and perhaps a little spin or two. I don't care for choreographed first dances and FI definitely wouldn't like it! I want it to be about us enjoying the moment, not about us trying to remember dance steps.

That's why we're taking them haha. We don't wanna look like middle school dancing since all eyes will be on us
  • I want to, but there isn't any time/money to fit it into our schedule or budget. I really want to take salsa dancing lessons anyway just for fun. FI says no. :p Although apparently, he did salsa dancing with a friend while he was out drinking one night! He won't dance with me, but give him a drunk chick that knows how to salsa....

I have no idea how we are going to manage our first dance. Awkward shuffling around. I'm thinking of skipping it.
  • We entered to win some at a bridal fair. It would be nice but not super high on the priority list.
  • I would love to take them, there is a place in the city that offers them but........... it is a 1.5 hour trip each way to that area, that is a lot of extra gas which adds up fast when you need anywhere from 6-8 lessons.

  • My aunt and uncle are ballrooms dancers, so if we had time to visit them, we might get a short lesson. But I am predicting we will be choosing our first dance song about 3 hours before the wedding because so far we can't find ANYTHING...so lessons won't help much!

  • We're okay at dancing together. I'm not concerned enough to spend $ on lessons right now.

FI is actually a fabulous dancer. Me, not so much lol.

Haha, well we want to just have a moment "to ourselves" just holding each other instead of actually dancing. To me that's our moment, and we don't need to put on a show for our guests. On another note, I thought about surpsrising FI with a lyrical/contemporary dance that I will choreograph for him, but idk yet.

Yeah we aren't doing a full on choreographed dance. We just wanna do more lol. We found a place near us that will do lessons to help just with your song. I'm kicking myself because there was a groupon for the place and I forgot to buy it :(

    That sucks!

  • I think we're going to. I don't want a completely choreographed dance, but I do want my FI to get some pointers on how to properly slow dance. He tends to be a crazy dancer and the center of attention on the dance floor and I wouldn't mind him learning some toned-down moves for the first dance. I know he'll be going all-out on the dance floor the rest of the night so I'd like the first dance to be a little more special since it's just the two of us.

  • My FI is pretty good with Latin dancing. I'm not terrible, but I would feel more confident if we took some lessons. I'm looking at classes at my university, as they tend to be more reasonably priced. The only problem is that I'm always swimming or coaching in the evenings, when the lessons tend to be.

These are my reasons for not doing a professionally choreographed dance too.  I used to dance competitively (not ballroom) and my FI has two left feet.  I thought about teaching him myself a waltz or something but we decided against it.

For dance lessions I'd suggest rather than expecting to learn a dance you can just take from class, I'd take moves that you both liked, put them together, and then just repeat a few of them.

  • I took ballroom when I was in middle school (part of etiquette lessons we all hated at the time, but I'm thankful for now!).  FI hasn't.  We have one friend who is an instructor who offered to give us a lesson with our song, but we haven't taken her up on the offer yet.

FI's mother is friends with the partner of the top instructor in town and they do lessons by video!  We might try that out to see if we actually want to do something in the studio.

Here's her website, if anyone wants to check it out: http://onlineballroomlessons.com/

I did! Plus when I was honored in our Club's annual Confederate Ball we took a waltz lesson again. One of my BMs and I did both together. We had some pretty good times at those lessons!

Aww, Chelsea--y'all should put on some music and dance around the kitchen one day!

I love slow dancing with FI, even if all we do is sway back and forth. There's something so intimate and romantic about it. That's why I'm perfectly fine just doing that for our first dance.
