Groom's cake question

Are any of you planning on having one? I'm toying with the idea, but I don't know how it works. I know you can have it at the rehearsal or at the wedding, and I know it's smaller than the wedding cake.

If it's smaller, how does everyone get a piece and not feel left out (if it's at the wedding)? Is it only for the wedding party?

Re: Groom's cake question

• We are thinking of having a gluten free groom's cake. Many of my Fi's family is gluten intolerant, so that way they can eat cake without us having to get our whole wedding cake gluten free. Chances are you're not in the same situation, but something to think about if you are having guests with food allergies.

• We're not having one but my cousin had one at his wedding.
Here was their wedding cake:
and here is the grooms cake:
There was a good amount of each. They had a large wedding though
• I am getting one made as a surprise for my groom. It will be our dessert at the rehearsal dinner. His parents are fine with this. It is big enough that all our guests at the RD will get a piece. Below is what the cake will look like. FI is a huge University of Tennessee and and it's where he proposed to me. Just another way we are tying it in to the wedding.

• I think I'm going to do one for at the rehearsal dinner. FI looooves cookie cakes, so I'll probably make a couple if I can bring them, and if not then just have them for after at his house. I've been to weddings where the grooms cake was small, and then they just had extra sheet cake in the back for people to eat if they wanted that flavor as opposed to the regular wedding cake flavor.

This is what I'm doing. I'm getting a suitcase with flags of the countries we have been and include where we are going on our honeymoon (a total of 11). The cake will be marble because that is FI's favorite flavor.

This is what I want to do, but I'm not sure of the logistics of getting it to the rehearsal because my baker won't deliver it that far (she's an hour from the reception venue but almost 2 from the rehearsal site). I want to get him a Lakers jersey cake because he's obsessed with them (I would prefer Orlando Magic, but hey, it's his cake ;) So, I may have to pick it up myself...

Or it could be at the reception venue on the wedding day, but I didn't know if it would be weird because not everyone would get a piece (180 guests) and if it was rude if they didn't.

Is there a baker closer that you can use? I won't be using the same place for the grooms cake and the wedding cake.

• I am getting one made as a surprise for FI on the wedding night. Haven't picked out exactly what I want but it will have something to do with UK. He is a HUGE Kentucky fan and also happens to be an alum. I am a UofL fan, so he would never expect me to pick out something UK :)

I'm not having one. We are spending so much money on the wedding already so it's not really necessary. Also we are paying to have a wedding cake (You know, for both of us?) so I don't get why he gets his own cake as well...

• I'm going to get one for our RD. Right now I'm thinking of getting/making a video game controller.

• Like some PP, we're having the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner.
• We probably won't have one at either one because we are thinking of doing a variety of mini desserts for the RD and regular wedding cake, but it sure does sound like something fun to do :)

• FI's a band instructor and plays every instrument from the accordian to the xylophone. . .He plays the accordian in the family swiss band along with the clarinet (not at the same time, though! lol) so I'm having a surprise grooms cake made to look like his accordian :) He has no idea and I think he'll love it! we'll serve it along with our regular wedding cake at the ceremony since our regular cake will probably only feed about 200 (which was the # we expected BEFORE the STD's went out. . . . ugh. the list is now at 292) so we should have enough cake. at FI's brother's wedding last year they had two WHOLE sheet cakes plus like 5 pies (groom LOVES pie, not so much cake) left over, we had them for the next day brunch/opening of the gifts party along with the TON of leftover food. It worked out well!

That is an awesome idea!

We are not doing a Groom's cake. Our caterer has a very amazing and famous mud pie; so that is pretty much our desert for everyone. I have a gluten intolerance and I am allergic to egg yolk so we were going to have a gluten free/vegan wedding cake for us. (well for me.. and FI will have some of both I am sure) However, I had a heck of a time finding someone who would make a gluten free cake with egg whites or vegan... So I started searching alternatives and found a rice krispie treat cake. FI is now obsessed with the idea, so we are doing that :)
• I'd never seen a groom's cake until my cousin's wedding last year in Pennsylvania...I don't think we'll do one. The wedding cake is for both of us. We don't need an extra thing to think about and pay for! (You guys came up with some really cute designs, though!)

I'm so torn on this! I want to surprise FI with an Auburn one, but he says he doesn't want one. Idk if he doesn't want one because our wedding cake is already uber expensive (he's not paying for either one), or if he really just doesn't want one. I want to ask him, but I don't want to ruin the surprise...I bet I'll end up getting one for the RD.

• I am getting on made for FI. He doesnt know what it looks like, just that I am doing one. Our baker threw it in for $50 because we have to have such a big cake for the "brides" cake. Here is my inspiration:
Fi is OBSESSED with Honda and has 5 dirt bikes, 2 4wheelers and 2 jet skis. I ordered mini replicas of his dirtbikes and 4 wheelers on amazon to put on it!

• We're having ours at our wedding...I've never been to a wedding without one! My bakery said most people usually have enough cake for everyone between the bride's cake and the groom's cake, but I'm having my cake big enough to feed everyone and FI's cake is going to feed about 100 people. Mine is white almond cake and his is chocolate. Most people will probably not eat both, but I really wanted my cake big enough to serve everyone.

Groom's cake is not a cake for the groom... doesn't anyone know where this tradition comes from???

The history of a groom's cake goes like this: the groom's cake was not to be served to the guests while at the wedding reception, but rather it was to be sliced up, placed into packages and given to them as favors when they departed. Single women at the wedding would take their pieces of cake home and sleep with it under their pillows in hopes of having a dream about their future husband.

That said, FI has been playing drums since he was little, so I'm getting him a surprise grooms cake for the rehearsal dinner, and we will be serving it to the guests. It will be drum themed, but I haven't really decided how it should look exactly. We did a cupcake tasting from the bakery I'm ordering from so I could get FI's favorite flavor - red velvet with cream cheese frosting!
