Dress Fittings and Tipping?

Does anyone know if it's customary to tip for your fitting appointments? I'm getting free alterations, and I wouldn't be tipping the seamstress, but the girl at the bridal salon that's been with me for every fitting, has made great suggestions for the bustle, and has just been totally awesome every step of the way. I guess she would be my consultant. Are any of you planning to tip the person you've been working with?

Re: Dress Fittings and Tipping?

  • My mom is paying for my alterations, but yes she planned on tipping the seamstress. She did an unbelieveable job with my dress so my mom wants to give her a tip.

  • We didn't tip.  The lady that did them has been doing our formal dresses for years.  We did end up paying her more than she initially suggested, but only because it was a lot of work to remove the lace and sew it back on when she shortened the dress

  • Not tipping my seamstress.  She owns the shop so I don't feel the need to tip.

  • I wasn't planning on tipping the seamstress b/c I have to pay for the alterations, but I think if they were free I would consider tipping. I never even thought of a tip for the seamstress to be honest, but I guess it makes sense considering we have to tip everyone else lol.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies, but it isn't the seamstress that I would be tipping. It would be the consultant I guess you would call her. She's been with me for every fitting, but she hasn't done a thing with the alterations themselves. I'm not planning on tipping the seamstress, it's this girl that's been helping me the whole time.

  • I didn't tip my seamstress/consultant.  She ended up charging us a bit more than we expected and she owns the shop.  She does amazing work though and my mom thought of it but we decided against it.  My mom and sister are also getting their dresses altered there.

Ceglare - For the consultant I would probably tip her since she sounds to be going above and beyond her duties.

I don't know that I would tip her.  This might be what they do all the time and you didn't tip her when she helped you with dresses I'm betting which is a lot more work...

But if you feel she deserves, go for it.

  • I have no idea- my mom is taking care of that and it is our family friend who is doing our alternations (including the BMs). She gave us all a discount so I'd assume we'll be tipping her??

  • Laurel,  I would get her a gift card somewhere instead of tipping her...
