When is a good time to start a registery if having a june 2012 wedding?!

FI and I have been trying to figure this one out. A lot of people will tell you to start at about 9 months. But we are having an engagement party and people are already buying for us and we haven't even registered!

I guess you should register before any pre-wedding parties.

We started a small registry already but we won't do the full one until about 9 months out.

I sometimes feel like it depends on the situation too.  FI and I are hoping to buy a house by the end of the year, so we might wait until after we do that to register so we'll know what we need.  I like how MMRoberts started a small registry just in case people want to send engagement gifts or whatever.

Someone on here mentioned that they planned to do it on their 1-year away mark.  I think its a cute idea, and FI and I might steal it and at least start a registry on that date, if its logistically possible.  I want to do it more in advance than I need to, because I tend to change my mind a lot, so I want lots of time to make sure its 100% right.

PP, that's a great idea! What a cute way to celebrate your 1 year mark. I might have to do this as well ! Another thing planning-related, if you or finance is a student, it would be smart to do a lot of major planning this summer, as in booking vendors, registering, BM dresses, and such. Over winter break would be a great time to finalize details. To add to the main question, do you ladies have ideas of where you may be registering once you decide on when to register? Any reasons behind your choices? We are thinking BB&B and Macy's (1 casual place, 1 fancier place) because they are easily accessible for guests and offer everything you could fathom for a home.

I was a Bridal Consultant at Macy's for close to five years, so I can speak volumes to this topic. Typically speaking it is a good idea to create a small registry about a year or year and a half out for engagement gifts, christmas, birthday etc... However, to expand a registry or register at multiple locations should be done about 6-9 months out depending on showers.
My FI and I created a registry at Macy's with things we know won't go out stock or be discontinued. We put china, crystal and pots and pans to start with. We will update it and add to it in November or so.

As of now I think we are going to register around August/September. I know we will register at BB&B, and the second store will most likely be Macy's.

Not sure when we are registering but my mom suggested I do before Christmas because my aunts will probably look on it for gift ideas.  We haven't really talked about where we want to register yet but FI really wants Home Depot.

ok so 9 months is normal? i guess i will start mine towards the end of summr. we are looking to get a house HOPEFULLY by the end of summer , so i guess its wise to wait until then and we can then see what we really need! thanks

I started putting stuff on ours a little while ago. You know how you think of things, and then go to make the list, and can't remember a darned thing?! Well, I do that all the time! So I decided that I am adding it as I think of stuff. (Amazon.com and Target.com) I haven't told anyone about the list, so no one will be looking at it yet, unless they search us.

We'll probably register near the end of the summer. I work at a high school so it will be easier to do it before I go back to work. We're going register at target so we can get fun stuff like games and camping gear and we'll probably do bb&b and crate and barrel or macy's too.

I've started a small one, but I won't finish it until October. That way if somebody needs an idea for Christmas it will be there for them to look at.

We're probably not even going to begin working on a registry until Nov/Dec of next year.  Our aunts/uncles don't really buy us Christmas gifts anymore and I don't really see the need to start any sooner than that.  Also, products change and get discontinued so often that I don't want to have to update my registry quarterly based on what is still available.  I must say though, I am very excited to get to register!  We'll probably do some combination of BB&B, Macy's, and Crate & Barrel.
