June 2012 Weddings

Programs and/or Fans?

How imperative are programs?  We are having a very simple ceremony that will last all of ten minutes.  There are no readers, unity candles or anything of the sort.    It is outdoors on covered (and well ventilated) patio.  Our guests will most likely not be outdoors for more than 30-40 minutes.  FI doesn't like the DIY fan programs.  I thought about passing out fans but I am afraid it will be a costly addition and that they will probably not be necessary.  The wedding is in Pennsylvania and the temperature is typically around 70-75 degrees this time of year (provided it doesn't rain or storm!).

I can't help but feel they might be a waste of time, money and paper but I will do whatever seems appropriate, just looking for some opinions! :)

Edit: Sorry the poll is incomplete and will not let me edit it! :(

  • You don't need either. I was at a wedding last Friday where the ceremony literally lasted less than 5 minutes. They had programs that only listed the names of the parents, bride & groom and WP. If you want people to know who everyone is, you can do that but it's so not necessary.
  • I agree with PP.  I was not going to do programs at all.  Unfortunately, that was one of the few things that FI wanted.  He says he likes to look at them when he goes to weddings.  If neither of you care if you have them or not then I would scrap them all together.

  • My original plan for programs was to print out ONE program, and hang it up near the doorway/ entrance that my guests will walk through. That way they can read the program and know what's going to happen, but I don't have to worry about the cost or picking up the extras.

However, I'm now leaning towards getting them from vistaprint- with a Groupon it'll cost me about $20 to make all the programs I need (and I'll get photo sharing cards, a car magnet, and a few other things).

I'm the same way.  I think it's a relatively inexpensive nice touch.  It doesn't have to be anything fancy but I think your guests will appreciate them.
  • Until I was in my 20s, I had never seen a program.  I have a large family and I go to at least 1 wedding a year.  I do not think that they are necessary.  If you have time and money, I would have them.  If you are running out of either, do not worry about it.
  • I personally think programs are important and it's annoying when couples choose not to use a program because it makes the ceremony seem like it is never going to end and it's nice to have something to follow along.
  • You really don't need either of them. Just one more thing to blow money on.

We're choosing to save some paper and skip the programs. We have introductions to all of the BP and family VIPs on our wedding website, and our ceremony will be traditional and not too long. With a 10 min ceremony, I definitely wouldn't do them. Sounds like the weather will be fine, too.
  • I agree that programs are not required. If it was a long ceremony I enjoy reading them so it doesn't seem so long.

I've added a simple booklet just because i'm a detailed type person and found a cost efficient way of doing them. So if you feel you need them, make some very simple ones as they will be thrown out anyways. But if you don't have the time or money, don't worry about them. Most people won't even remember that you didn't have them.

  • My sister is putting together programs and printing them herself on a nice card stock paper, but it was her idea and she is the MOH, otherwise I wouldn't have had them at all. I don't think they are necessary if the ceremony is short and somewhat casual.
  • Other.

You don't really need either and with a simple ceremony I wouldn't worry about it too much.
