Make Up Artist

Hey Ladies, for those who are hiring a make-up artist, when do you plan to do your trial? I have mine scheduled for March and I am thinking that might be too soon.

Also, how much are you spending for your MUA? I know rates vary around the country but I am trying to get an estimate of what it usually costs for a bridal trial, for bridesmaids and for day of wedding make-up.

I currently booked a MUA and she is charging me $50 for the trial which including eyelashes. $50 for each bridesmaid and  $150 for myself and that includes her coming to me and doing touch-ups throughout the day and night until 9:30pm. In your opinion is this a good deal?

Re: Make Up Artist

  • I am having a trial in April. I think the make up is $30. The trial is the same price and the make up for my bridemaids is the same price.

I'm going to have the same person do my hair and makeup, so I'm planning on doing my trial the day of my bridal portraits. I'm planning on hiring the same person that a lot of my photographer's brides use, so I'm not worried about how it'll turn out. I'm planning to do bridal portraits in either April or May.
  • I'm doing my trial the day of my bridals, kind of tricky but I trust my MUA. He's helped me with make-up for a couple years now (he works at a MAC counter). He's charging $50 per person (that's also me) and that includes eyelashes. I think $150 is kind of steep, but then again she is coming back for touch ups. I guess the question you should ask is if that's really necessary? Why not just buy a powder from her (or just a powder in general) for your own touch ups and save $100?

Her bridal price is higher than the bridesmaids. $85 is her base price for brides and her staying until 9:30 is part of the add-on package. I am terrible with and at make-up so I am afraid I will fail, LOL. I have only worn it once in my life and that was for our engagement photo shoot. I am also changing into a different color for my 2nd dress so it would be helpful because she will include a whole new look for that as well.

I do think it may be a little high but for North NJ, which where she is from, but I honestly have no idea.

If you are getting your make up done by a MUA  I would assume they know what they are doing and the make up should stay on its own for the whole day... isnt that what we are paying for!?!?!

  • I don't think her prices are too high. I'm am in search of one & from central NJ. Can I have her name /number/website? Also, I would have your trial sooner, what if you don't like the way she does it. I found the top recommended mua are already booked up for my day. I am good at doing mup, in fact I do it p/t at a salon on Saturdays. I am a licensed cosmetologist & certified mua. I need my bp and mom done. I figured if I liked the mua work, I would have her do mine so I can relax.

  • I had my trial already but I thinking of having a second one in April when I do my hair trial so i can see them together. Sounds to me like your getting a great deal for your area. Im in MD and everything here is so expensive my make and hair is going to be $450.00 just for me, but she is changing my look(hair+make up) for the reception. So I deff think ur getting a great deal :)

<div>I do a lot of professional shoots/modeling shows, etc and MUA touch up those girls every two minutes! No matter how good the artist, your lip stick rubs off/fades (especially when eating and drinking), your face gets shiny from heat/nerves, etc. I've thought about keeping the MUA around to do touch ups after our first look and perhaps after the ceremony. Once we get to the reception I don't particularly care.</div><div>
</div><div>My artist is charging $100 for the bride and $65 for anyone else.</div><div>
</div><div>For the NJ girls-my friend used Yvonne Moss last June and she charged $85 pp. </div>

Hm.... I thought the benefit of paying to have it done was to ensure that it would be long lasting. If that is the case then I am not going to waste my money on it!

<div>I am terrible at putting on makeup so that is why I am paying for someone to do it. But if you are really good at doing your own makeup and you are using high quality brands, there really isn't much difference of you doing vs. a professional. My MUA uses MAC products, so if i were to go and buy the makeup myself and I could do it myself, I would get the same results.</div><div>
</div><div>The only real difference in quality is if you get someone who uses the airbrushing make up. That stuff last forever, athough you still have to watch out for shine. </div><div>
</div><div>Instead of paying extra to keep the MUA around for a few more hours, I would probably just ask for the lipstick and some powder (most will give them to you for free) so you can touch up lipstick and shine yourself.</div>

  • Thanks ladies. I really like her work, so I definitely want to work with her. I guess it really does matter the area you are in, because prices do vary.
