teachers- nwr

I know there are a few teachers on this board, and I wanted some advise. FI and I are hoping to move this summer so we can be closer to our families. They are about 2 hours away, and FI's dad is even further.

I've been applying for jobs, and just got called for an interview today! It is much closer, but earlier this week, 2 jobs that are in our ideal location became availalbe and I applied for them. I am worried that if this interview goes well and I am offered and this job, one of the others may call after I have to accept. FI wants to buy a house when we move, obviously we would rather buy where we want to be, espeicailly if there is work available there. Is there a rule about accepting and declining, or has anyone faced a similar situation?

  • You have an option to tell the job offer you are awaiting two interviews and will need sometime to think about the job offer.  Of course don't turn it down but politely make them aware there are many offers on the table for you.  This could also open up doors for pay negotiations.  Think it through and make sure you keep everyone in the loop.

Same. Technically you have until you sign your contract. 2 summers ago I was offered a job on the spot at my first interview and then got calls for more. I was upfront with them, but I did cancel a few interviews that I knew I didn't really want to work at. They knew I had more interviews and did what they could to try and get me to work there which was cool and very nice. The position was originally part-time when I applied and they re-did the entire schedule so they could give me more classes and make me full-time. Just keep them in the loop.

  • Same!  As long as you're honest with everyone you have interviews with, I doubt any potential employer would be mad (and honestly if they do get mad, would you want to work for them anyway?).  People understand that there are a ton of circumstances that need to be considered when accepting a job -- especially in another city.

  • I ran into the same thing last summer when I was applying- got several calls from all over, since I applied everywhere I could think of to keep my options open.
When do the job postings for the ideal location close?  Often it takes up to a week after that to schedule interviews.  You can certainly do what PPs suggested and let your potential employer know there may be other offers on the table as long as you are nice about it.  Just be wary of the timeline- if you don't commit by a certain time, they may move on.  This is a tough call- I don't envy you!  I am not a risk taker so the decision to take the chance would be so hard for me.
    Good luck!

must be nice to have an interview already. I've applied to about 20 positions in 2 counties and haven't heard anything yet. I suppose its a bit slow here in FL. Most principals wait til after school is out to interview.

  • Thanks for the input! The other positions don't close until June 11th, so there is potential to leave this one hanging a long time if I am offered the job. I don't know if they will set a deadline that they need my decision by. If I ask, they may set one, but if I don't, they may get impatient. I don't want to leave them hanging forever. If I am offered something, this will be tough!

  • Honestly, you have to do what is best for you.  Depending on the laws in your state, I'm assuming you have at-will employment.. meaning that even if you sign a contract, you are free to leave the job at any time.  This means that you CAN accept a job and then later "resign" prior to starting.  Is this ideal?  No, but it happens all the time. My fiance and I are both teachers.  My fiance accepted a job right out of college in May, and was offered a much better position (full-time verses half-time) in August, and had to resign.  The only downside of this is that it can close bridges in school districts for future employment (not necessarily, but it CAN) so it's not advisable to do this if you think you may end up wanting to work there in the future.  For my FI, his administrator was hardly even surprised when FI called and regretfully offered his resignation, then submitted his letter 2 days later.  The administrator was certainly not upset with FI, and I think would still hire FI for a position if he were interested in it (though we are both very happy in our jobs and not looking).

When I was getting out of college, I ran into similar issues and called the principal of my student teaching school for advice.  She suggested exactly what I am saying to you: accept any job offer if you will be willing to work there if you don't get another offer.  There is a big chance you will NOT be getting any other offers.  Accept, accept, accept.  Then, do what you have to do later.  Telling a school district "maybe" will likely result in them moving on to other candidates.

Best advice I've gotten: take every interview you can and don't worry about whether or not to accept until it's actually been offered. If the not first choice is offered, tell them you need a few days to think it over. Hopefully within that time the other situation would become clearer. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket and then have it not work out! Good luck! I hope you get the job you really want!!

This. Don't stress about it until you have (an) offer(s) on the table.

Also, idk if it's a typo or not, but advise=verb, advice=noun (sorry I'm not trying to be nitpicky, it's just one of my biggest pet peeves lol)

This!  You may have 100 interviews, but only get called back for one or two.
