Reception Food, Are Appitizers expected with a huge buffet spread?

I am trying to decide to do passed appitizers during a short cockatil time while the wedding party takes pictures. We are taking a lot of pictures before the wedding inlcuding a "First Look" so we can get the reception going. The cocktails may only be 20 or 25 minutes so can't decide. What is everyone else doing?

Re: Reception Food, Are Appitizers expected with a huge buffet spread?

  • We're doing a cocktail hour from 4-5 then we'll arrive and dinner will be served. We're doing a fruit and veggie spread because I didn't want to do a whole bunch of appetizers when we're already do plated dinners (good size portions), wedding cake, and our favor is our candy buffet. I didn't wanna go overboard with food
  • I think it's always a good idea to serve food with alcohol, even if it's not a lot.
  • Its a regional thing, because our cocktail hour is insanely large.

    If I were you I'd have a few passed appetizers for people to snack on while they wait.

  • We're having a buffet, along with a cocktail hour. We're going to have fruit, veggies and cheese for the cocktail hour so that people have some food to munch on, especially with the alcohol that will be served.

  • We are going to have a few trays of fruit and cheese out for snacks.

    This!  There is going to be so much food at our wedding I don't know if people will be able to dance!  Just kidding, they will need to dance to burn all of the calories they will be eating.

    Cocktail hour:
    *Fruit/veggie/cheese spread
    *10 hot passed appetizers

    Meal:
    * Pasta
    * Salad
    * Entree (4 choices)

    Dessert:
    * Cake
    * Venetian table (includes 10 cheesecakes/cakes, chocolate cordial cups, chocolate fountain, and probably more - I've only seen a pic)
    * Candy Buffet for our favors

    Our guests better not go home hungry!  We've already made sure that we will be able to take the extras from the Venetian table home.  I know some places it's not allowed, but I would be upset if we weren't able to since we upgraded our package for that reason.
  • I agree with PP about having food with alcohol. We are having a cocktail hour. There will be fruit, veggie, and cheese display as well as a few passed appetizers. Nothing huge but enough that people won't go hungry.

  • We are having 5 hot apps and I'm debating about adding a fruit/cheese display as well. Our cocktail hour starts at 6:30pm on a Friday so I know people will be STARVING by the time cocktail hour rolls around. People in my area seem to eat dinner around 5-5:30. Whereas I'm lucky if I eat dinner before 9:30pm most nights.

  • I would suggest doing like some of the PPs and have a simple fruit/veggie/cheese display since it's such a short cocktail hour. Or choose two, veggies and cheese or fruit and cheese! Easy!

  • We're letting everyone start eating before we get there, but not immediately most likely. There will be chips/pretzels out.
  • We're doing 5 passed hors d'oeuvres and 2 stations.

    I think it's nice to have something for your guests. It doesn't have to be a lot of options or heavy ones. Maybe just one of two things for them to snack on

    We're having a buffet and a cocktail hour with passed apps. Here's what we're having during cocktail hour:

    -Pecan-crusted chicken
    -Stuffed baked potatoes
    -Shrimp remoulade cups
    -Oysters Rockefellar

    We have three more to choose (the package comes with seven passed apps) and I'm letting FI choose. Our package also includes passed hot and cold sandwiches, including: mini-BLTs, mini muffalettas, and ham, turkey, and roast beef finger sandwiches.

  • We're having a 45 min "cocktail hour" with two appetizers. They were included with our buffet dinner package.
