Reception Music?

FI and I are big time country fans and want a decent amount of newer country played at the reception played... amoung the normal play list songs.  I wanted to get an idea of the music/songs you wanted played at your reception??

We wanted songs/bands like:
5 O'clock Somewhere (cocktail hour)
Margaritaville
Cupid Shuffle
Rascal Flatts
Brad Paisley
Nickel Back
Keith Urban
Kenney Chesney
Electric Shuffle
Katy Perry
(some) Oldies, etc...

Re: Reception Music?

  • I am a big country fan too! :)

We will be going the ipod/computer route, unfortunately. We will have a ton of music. A little bit of everything. Chad is going to be in charge of the playlists.

I'm not a big fan of country myself, but I do like the ones that you have chosen.

We are going the ipod route also, so will have a bunch of everything. If I can help it though, a lot of it will be ska and punk music. But, I do want a variety so everyone can enjoy it.

Our plan i sto play mostly top 40, which would be a mix of stuff, with a lot of old Rythym & Blues thrown in. Our first dance is At Last by Etta James.

  • I'm not really a big country fan, but my mom and grandma love it.  My FI and I (plus our friends and most of his family) listen to a lot of rock so that's what we'll mostly be playing.

  • I've joked about puting a clause in the contract saying that if a song that is accompanied by some sort of dance is played, he doesn't get paid.

We'll play classic rock and a lot of motown (our property backs up to a club where there are weddings and I listened to many, many wedding bands/DJs over the years...motown is a crowd pleaser!).  We'll have some of our music, too.  Our music is a little different.  :)

    We're dancing to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6EiIdy8xVU

FI wanted it to be this one because he sings it to me all the time, but it'd decidedly un-dance-able. It sounds likea hoe-down!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7eFHI_2Is0

Agreed! And any sort of give away (maracas, hats, sunglasses) would also be a deal breaker.

As far as types of music it will be fairly eclectic. We've talked to our DJ about everything we like and don't like so we should have a good mix of music. However, no country as I hate it (and hate it more since I'm forced to listen at work).

Totally agree!! I can't stand them.

Good thing I love love LOVE my DJ. He is amazing and knows how to get a crowd up and moving. I will give him a list of what i don't like and I will trust him with everything else.

  • I put other becasue we watn a mix of current music and oldies... we are huge fans of Elton, Billy Joel, Al Green and Stevie Wonder! As for country, I kind of hate it... I also agree about group dances!!

  • We're having mostly current music and rock music. The band we have plays mostly current music and we have to give them a list of songs that we want. I'm letting FI be in charge of the music - I trust the band to play good music - we see them all the time and I'm leaving the rest up to FI to come up with a list of music.

  • Country reminds me of all my HS dances, all they'd play was country and rap-no joke :-(

Anyway, I think we'll have a mix of Top 40, Classic Rock and 80s music- that way, there's something for everyone. Electric Slide, Macarena and Cupid Shuffle just might be thrown in for the heck of it ;-)

  • We'll have mostly country, a lot of older country though.  I have to talk to FI about what else he wants.  We tend to like country, but we love pretty much everything!

  • We're going to do a lot of classic rock with some current stuff sprinkled in.  I agree as to the cheesy dance related songs - none of those.  My one bridesmaid really wants one of those cheesy songs though, so if I give in - it will be one of her choosing and that will be her birthday present.  LOL.
  • Haha Claire said it perfectly!! And we will be having zero country. We'll have some of everything else though. Most of our guests are in their 40s or older and so we will be having some oldies. For me and FI some 80/90s and for others some pop. Not much rap if any. I will have ONE country song because ever since I heard the song that says something about I held her first or I loved her first (or something like that) I knew that would be the song I would dance with my dad to. BTW who sings that and what's the title?

  • I chose other because we'll probably have a combination of everything. But, most of it will probably be country.
  • @AnnaKay - Thanks! Hopefully I can find another version of it that isn't as country...haha

  • I love country music, but I have 2 left feet! We'll  play a mix of everything for the people doing most of the dancing (which won't be me!) I have several recommendations for 1 DJ, so we'll check him out, but $$$$ is a big factor. Personally, I love the ipod route--what a great way to remember your wedding!!

  • I think we'll primarily have current hits and rock.  FI and I don't keep up with current music a whole lot, because for some reason our house - and our house alone - is a dead zone, and I don't enjoy fiddling with radio stations in the car, haha.  But I'm pretty sure I can trust my DJ to play music we like.

During the cocktail hour and dinner though, what I REALLY want is to play instrumental versions of Disney songs.  I know this sounds really juvenile, but I really want full-on classical-sounding orchestral pieces, if I can find them, and I know all of my BMs will think it's awesome!
