African American Weddings

What songs are you...

Playing at your reception. I'm talking about the songs that EVERYBODY will dance too!! Cha Cha Slide, Cupid Shuffle........ "Swag Surfing" LOL...
I am totally clueless! I went to a wedding where the dj played "old school" music THEE WHOLE TIME... Needless to say, people were on their butts, instead of on their feet! Let me know what you are playing to get the **coughs** party started!

Ditto! We told our DJ that we want the classics (Smokey, Diana, etc) during the cocktail hour, R&B (112, Case) and maybe a little more of the classics during dinner, and after dinner.... we want more of what you would hear if you went to a party/club today. Mix it up to keep the crowd dancing!

Y'all I'm no spring chicken and neither are my guests.  We played a bunch of old school hits but people were still up dancing.  I guess they just liked reminscing.  Plus I don't even know the songs on the radio that the young folks are listening to these days (damn I sound like my mama LOL!)  We did play like cupid shuffle, electric slide and those kind of line dance songs.  But we mainly played music from our generation.  Yas, DH and I like hip hop too, but old school.  Not like sugar hill gang old school but biggie, 2pac old school.  And I love me some T.I. too girl.  I can't believe I didn't ask the dj to play any.  Also, I love reggae and I knew that some of my friends from the islands would be there and would appreciate it, so I asked the dj to do a reggae mix.  My new father in law loves James Brown, so I asked the dj to play some James Brown for him, so he and I danced to a James Brown song together.  It was kinda cute.

So, I guess I just kind of thought about the eclectic diverse group of folks that were going to be at my wedding and asked the dj to play songs that catered to their individual interests.

LOL @ TAM. Its all good. lol Anywho, we are not reall yhaving dancing at my reception because of my parent's strong religious convictions, but its really crazy because my hubby is African and you know they love to dance, so we will see what happens.  I do plan on Cha Cha sliding and doing the Cupid Shuffle and the Michael Jackson dance... And you have me laughing about swag surfing.  LOL.  How about "Teach Me How to Dougie" you know thats how we do in Texas.

We plan to play a nice mixture as pp mentioned about classics/r&b during cocktail hour and dinner and then after the bouquet and garter toss I want nothing but music that will keep the guests on the floor. Of course all of the line dances. I do want to make sure that they have the clean version of songs before.

At my sister's wedding last month their horrible dj on so many levels (brought his cd's, didn't have a lot of songs we requested, my brother-in-law had to go to his truck and get his i-pod) played songs that were unedited imagine the looks on our family members faces especially the older ones when they heard p***y, m-fer, f'k, etc in  the songs they started yelling we were having a good time and we can keep having a good time without all of that nasty language and music. Definitely don't want that happening at my reception.

Yes!!!! I was like no no no cut that off cut that off. We were all looking like ohhhh shoot. So yeah he was a horrible dj. Not to mention they had people from their church in attendance, etc. So I want to hear everything he plans to play because I don't want any surprises like that.

Nightmare! Eek...I trust my DJ, but will still be taking a listen to songs that could go either way.
