We have a joint checking account and we both have our own individual accounts. I manage both my account and our joint account. He manages his own personal account. If he has to make any big purchases out of the joint account he lets me know. I'm an accountant so basically I'm in charge of all of the household finances. I'm one of those anal accountants that balances her checkbook on a daily basis so I monitor them both online. :-)

FI and I have individual accounts in which will keep but will also be getting a joint account. I will maintain my account and the joint account. I'm not a accountant but I'm very anal when it comes to my dollars!!! LOL!!

Like the pp FI and I both have our own individual accounts and a joint checking account. He really doesn't use the joint checking, but I do if I am making a major purchase or buying something for the wedding. So far so good! HTH!

thanks ladies...we are going to be using our joint account sans the individual accounts though so thats where keeping tabs on the daily balance part comes from...we still have our individual accounts at the moment and use a shared amex (lately its mostly been for vacations and wedding related purchases) but i wonder if anyone has any tips if they don't have individual accounts

DH and I have individual checking/saving accts as well as a joint checking/savings acct. We balance our own individual accts but he balances our joint acct. He's much better at balancing the books than I am. Our rule for our checking acct is to make sure we mark any and all transactions in the check book ledger! This is very important for balancing our acct.

we got our joint checking and savings when we got engaged.  We both decided to keep our own individual checking and savings accounts also though.  Good thing is that we were already had accounts at the same bank so we both have online access to our individual and joint accounts everytime we login to view our account status.  But for the most part, we only use the joint account to do things like pay rent and utilities (since we lived together before we got married), groceries, and if we bought things for the wedding.  so far it's working out pretty well. we just make sure that we talk about additional expenses that we may use the joint account for.

Indy accounts. Household finances are settled through Quicken software.  It is a lifesaver!

FI and I have a joint one for the house and then we have out own. We keep track by checking the online balance and letting each other know when we use it. Ours is mainly for the bills though and mortgage so that helps alot too. Our wedding account is completely seperate and I keep track of it.
