POLL: Getting People on the Dance floor????

and keeping them there! What are some of your nontraditional  dance songs or ideas to get people on the dance floor? I went to a reception recently and it was tough getting people on the dance floor to keep the party moving.  I know this depends on the DJ mostly but I was thinking about doing a special 'generations' dance or a special 'couples' dance or something creative like a dance competition or something...so what are your ideas??? BESIDES THE TYPICAL LINE DANCES (i.e. cupid shuffle, electric slide, etc.) Get CREATIVE!

I think it also depends on your guests. I've been to receptions where the dj was actually rockin out, but the majority of the guests seemed to be more interested in mingling and chatting it up. If you've got a bunch of partiers (is that a word?) They'll keep it rolling. That's not to say the dj doesn't have to put in work. I've seen soul train lines too. U could also ask them to write down 3 fav songs on the back of the RSVP.

I like your suggestion to do special generations dances, that's what I thought about doing too.  I'm probably going to do a whole Michael Jackson tribute too, since my FI and I were, well still are big fans.  I was also thinking about doing regional dance themes like I'm going to have friends from Chicago so we were going to do a House Music theme, Go-Go for my DC guests, Florida Base Music ('cause that's where I'm from), etc.  Of course we will do the line dances, but that's my concern too.  I think that I may need to assign one of my friends to be like a "hype man" LOL

I was going to do a Michael Jackson and Prince tribute. I am going to have a bunch of teens and young people at my reception so I am asking what songs get them on the dance floor. I am having a good mixture of songs from the 60s to today to make sure I get everyone on the dance floor. I am asking guests to include one song they want to hear in the invitations as well.

We are having music from the 60's to now, and both families love to dance. We also are trying to hire a radio dj to keep the party going. I like the generational dance idea though, I'll file that away to use. Thanks

Have your BMs and Groomsmen get on the floor and stay on the floor.  That's what I'm hoping will get and keep the party started.  Also, don't have a ton of formalities before the dancing b/c people will be tired and just want to go home by the time the dancing time comes.  I went to a wedding once and there were about 5 different dances that had to happen, a million toasts, cutting the cake, etc. etc.  I was falling asleep by the time the DJ got going, and most everyone at my time was also.  So maybe keeping it short will help?
