ENGAGEMENT RING RE-SIZING ISSUES!!! (KINDA LONG)

Ok...I thought we had a solution for my ering and wedding band but maybe we dont.  In a previous post I stated how I loved my ring but I was having a hard time finding a band.  So a co-worker suggested that we maybe check the local pawn shops.  We did and they were really nice and assured that the diamonds where REAL. The manager even told me to go get the ring appraised and if the diamonds were not real then he would refund our money.  The prices were so good that the FI suggested that I get another ering and a band to match.  So I picked out a 1ct TW Three Diamond ring with the princess cut diamonds on the sides and a 1/2 ct TW band with princess cut diamonds for $370 dollars!!!!!! I COULDNT BELIEVE IT!!! So today I went to pick up the rings and I questioned about sizing....and I have little fingers and the ring was kind of big.  I wear a 5.5 and the ring was a size 8.  I was told that I couldnt get the ring sized because of the risk of putting stress on the diamonds!!! I had never heard of it before.  So my question to you ladies is HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SIZE A RING DUE TO RISK OF PUTTING STRESS ON THE DIAMONDS?!?!? I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO DO BEFORE WE ACTUALLY PURCHASE THE RINGS!!

I may be wrong but I think you can only go up or down 2 sizes. Because of the setting of the ring, the diamonds wont be placed correctly if its sized too much either way.Same thing happened to us with DH's first band.

My FI is having the same issue. He has little hands for a guy and we are having a hard time finding a ring that will fit. :(

No, I have never heard of that before.  But what Divadivine25 says makes sense.  Because of the setting and the diamonds on the side that could be a problem, since you're going down so many sizes.  I really hate to hear that because you seemed so excited about your ring.  But like I told you.  I love the e-ring that you have now.  It is so unique.  If you decide to get a wedding band custom made to fit your current e-ring, I think that would look really nice.  Like I said, a wedding band on either side of the e-ring.  You can even get it custom made around the prongs.  That is if you can't come up with a solution to your new e-ring issue.

If I understand correctly, ring bands are sometimes cut and stretched when sized down.  As you might imagine, the diamonds can fall out - this is what apparently happens with micropave diamond bands that are sized down.  Best to get it in the right size from the start, if possible.

You can have a bar put in the ring to make it sized better or you can have prongs (or balls) put in it. It can be done! Just not sized to change the formation.

I have little fingers too, my ring is a size 4.5 and it was sized down from a size 8 ring.  My ring is a solataire though so it may be different for a 3 diamond ring

Diva is correct. Rings can only be sized to a certain point, after that new heads are required b/c the diamond will not sit properly. Please make sure your diamonds are real. If you got both rings for $370. they may be industrial diamonds. Try to get a GIA certified appraisal, that's not hard to do, especially when you get your diamond covered on your insurance policy (insurance co. requires it). With diamonds, there is such a thing as too good to be true.

If a ring has channel set diamonds it can't be re-sized more than a half size up and that does put stress on the diamonds. It can't be sized down. Other rings they usually say no more than 1-2 sizes either way.

Thanks Ladies for the advice! I didnt know what I was going to do honestly but the FI and I decided just to get a custom made band to fit the ring that I have.  It would've been good to save that money but you get what you pay for........

I never heard that, but I guess it makes sense.  Hopefully you can find another ring you like just as much.
