Cake Decisions

Is it best to go with fondant or butter cream?

Oh the age old question....fondant makes for a prettier cake but doesn't taste as good as buttercreme (IMO). It is easier to shape into the fancier designs than buttercreme and is usually $1.00 more per slice than buttercreme. If you have a simply designed cake...I say go for buttercreme. If you have an intricate design, your baker will most def use fondant.HTH

I agree with mycicybride and also keep in mind that buttercream can melt in heat so depending on when or where your having your wedding may play a factor.  It usually isn't much of an issue though so I would talk to the baker about that.  Buttercream does taste better though.

ditto mycicy and MrsW.Personally, I hate fondant, I think it tastes terrible so I'm having butter cream frosting.  My reception is indoors so I don't have to worry about the frosting melting.  If you find a really good baker, they can make butter cream look as good as fondant, I've seen it done.

CC previous post. The thing is a really good baker makes really good-tasting fondant so it all depends. Fondant is more expensive. Buttercream has a better taste In general (but not always) and you are limited in terms of shape/design

Well it depends. Most people don't like fondant because most of the time the fondant that is used is cheap. I have used and eaten really good fondant. Buttercream is going to be on the cake regardless of what cake you get. If you want to get a fondant cake ask the baker to let you taste the fondant only. Some of the best fondant IMO is fondant that is made from strach. There are also really good brands of ready made fondant, but those tend to be a little more expensive, but the quality is there. As for buttercream, there can be some horrible tasting buttercream. The quality and the freshness of the butter usually determines how the buttercream will taste and look on a cake ( and the skill of the decorator). Vanilla is the base flavor of buttercream, so I would try the buttercream, like the fondant, by it self especially since no matter what cake you get, you will most likey have buttercream on your cake and that will make up the majority of your cake flavor profile. From a decorating stand point, fondant is easier to work with and is more forgiving than buttercream and it's eaiser to cover up messups too, but it's an extra step for the decorator to do for the cake.So in summary, just try it and see what you like. (sorry it's so long)

Like the previous poster, I've also heard that if you're going for fondant, don't get the cheap stuff (some bakers use cheap fondant) b/c it can also be gooey and very waxy in taste.  The more expensive fondant is not like that.

I agree with everyone's input. The key to fondant is using a great quality fondant, the better quality fondant product tastes like marshmallow, the cheap ish takes like wax and it's gummy, IMO. take aquaviolet's advise and ask your potential bakers to taste their fondant product whenever you do your sample tastings...also make sure you ask them the pricing per slice when using fondant on your cake design too. You've received some excellent feedback, so you are now better prepared whenever you go searching for the right baker!  :)

We had our cake tasting on Saturday and FI hated the fondant but he loved the butter cream. We decided on lemon cake w/lemon curd, almaretto cake w/raspberry filling, and Key lime cake with lemon filling. The butter cream was to die for but of course I want fondant so it will look pretty...LOL...The baker has assured me that she can make the cake I want with butter cream and it will be pretty as well...Lord for her sake it better be pretty...LOL

We were worried about this too. When we did our cake tasting we asked to taste the fondant and it was good. So we went with the fondant. A good baker will use quality fondant or will be able to make a quality cake using buttercream frosting.
