Registry Question

So I got my "8 months to go" e-mail from The Knot, and it mentions beginning to register. I was under the impression that FI and I would register about 6.5 months before the wedding, at the end of October (to avoid going near a mall within 2 months of Christmas) My question is: When is the appropriate time to register? Is it 6 months before? 8 months? TIA :)

Unless you've got an engagement party coming up, so long as you're registered by when your invitations go out, I think you're fine. I hear the only downside to registering early is that some items may be discontinued in time, so you'll have to make sure you re-register for similar items if that occurs.

I wouldn't register now because as people say, stuff goes out of season. I would wait until just before your bridal shower and register then.

I definitely agree w/pp, but would also say that we got our first "wedding gift" about a month after we sent out our save-the-dates. We'd already put a few "core" things on our registry that we were pretty sure wouldn't drop off, and just added more when we got closer to the actual wedding (multiple times actually). Thinking about who the gift was from, I'm glad they had a registry to look at since their taste is a bit...different than ours.

Where are you going to register at? Macy's was ok but Crate and Barrel had a lot of items out by the time we actually got married.

nobody bought a single item off my registry until my shower 3 weeks before the wedding.....so don't worry about doing it so early!

It doesn't really matter. We did our C&B one when we got engaged and our Macy's one maybe 9 months out? We haven't had any issues, but we didn't register for anything with a "pattern" at C&B (more kitchen/gadget-type stuff). Even at Macy's the only patterned this is our bed linens, which have been around forever (because I loved them years ago!) and our china. I think those are the things that tend to go out of style. You might want to get it out of the way now and then add stuff later. As a bonus, some people might use it to buy Christmas gifts for you!

I think it just depends on your situation.  We just registered a couple weeks ago (we're about 4.5 months out).  This was because we sent out STD with a website address and wanted something for the guests to look at if they wanted.  We just added a few things we know would not be discontinued but will add more when the date gets closer.  If you are planning on having multiple showers or engagment parties where people may bring you a gift, perhaps you should begin registering but don't worry if you haven't yet.

My experience (with many friends who've been married now, and me having to shop off of their registries) has been that Macy's registries are usually pretty well stocked (not many "no longer available"s), but that Crate & Barrel seems to have an issue. I love C & B, and we will likely register there, but they seem to switch out stock a lot. Even the necessities. Most of my friends registered there, and they all had several things on their registries that were no longer available when it got even within six months of the wedding. One of them had her silverware suddenly get discontinued! So, it doesn't seem to be that it's just "seasonal" stuff you have to look out for at C & B - the issue is that the store seems to treat most of its kitchen and household serveware as seasonal. You just have to keep an eye on it, and I wouldn't use it as my primary registry for that reason.

That's weird, I haven't had any issues at all with my C&B registry. Maybe I am just lucky and picked stuff that everyone wants so it stays in stock? LOL.

All the stuff I've read puts the range at 6-8 months before. My goal is to have the bulk done by mid-November and then to have the links posted on our wedding website. I have people who like to plan ahead and I want them to have the option of taking advantage of Black Friday and after Christmas sales and holiday bonus buys. (Is it bad that I figure, hey, if they get it on sale, maybe they'll get us more! :D Although I know that sales have allowed me to buy something on the registry that was above our price point at regular price.)

We registered really early, mostly to take the most advantage of the registry bonuses. My family has been shopping off of it for Christmas, birthday, and housewarming gifts. We only have a few things at the moment at Macy's and Williams and Sonoma. I have kept the seasonal things off them, like linens and towels. I am going to go next week to put those on.

If I had a longer engagement, I would have totally registered early at Macy's for the benefits. I have a 40 dollar gift card mostly from my purchases.

FI and I are planning on registering in November around our 8 month mark because family keeps asking! Plus I have a sneaking suspicion that it makes for easy Christmas/birthday this year! Plus my family LOVES holiday sales, why should I deny them? :) Good luck!

I keep forgetting what the code name Angela (AKA LadyDove) gave me for being a consultant at the giant "M".... but anyways I used to be one... now I work in the in the home dept. The best advice I have for when to register is 3-4 months out. That way you stay in one season. Personally, I'm 11 months out and I have a registry already, LOL, but I know for sure what will be discontinued or go clearance and I think it would be nice for my Fam to shop off of for Christmas and my Birthday. The main things you want to stay away from if you do register earlier are towels, bedding, casual everyday dinnerware (excluding Fiesta) and table linens. You can, for the most part, do all the big stuff... like china, pots and pans, bakeware, stemware and electrics. Just make sure and go into the store and print your list 3 months before to see what all has gone clearance so you can remove them and add more.I can't tell you how annoying it is when girls do their registry 1 year out and then never come back in the store to check on it again. Their guests are just a nightmare! They get so angry with the me for not having anything in stock because it all went order only or clearance. Anyways, hope that helps a little. :D
