African American Weddings

just started planning....head hurts ;^(

Hi all, I just started planning and I now this is all I can think about. I have so many ideas of
what I want, what I don't want, colors, venues, etc. I have books about weddings, I have been on the computer for the past 4 days straight.....I am exhausted....and now since my
annoucement my brother has asked his girlfriend, guess it's in the air...

Details:  Date: planning on Sept. 2013 (date depends on if venue available,I'm flexible)
Colors: ? I like coral (peach), tan, pale green, turquoise, silver
Guest number: I said 80, more like 100
Budget: still trying to figure that out, I know what I'm not going to spend
Dress: haven't physically looked in a store, only online

I have started writting things down, ugghhh, I even work with a lady that does wedding
planning on the side but I don't want her all up in my biz.....I have family that would help but
then 50-11 opinons/suggestions would bombard me.....it's a lot....any advice would be
greatly appreciated, I have been reading previous posts, so I am doing my homework...I'm
going to take a break ....

  • Welcome! This is the best board on the knot and the ladies here will help you a ton.

First, sit down with your Fiance and set a budget. Setting a budget will determine everything (How many people you can invite, how much you can spend on a dress, how much you can spend on a venue).

Then decided what's really important to you and your fi. Is it important that your whole family is there? Do you have to have alchol? WOuld you mind getting married on another day if it's cheaper? Include your FI in that.

Once you've decided on your budget and the top 5-10 things you two want in your wedding its much easier to filter the barrage of opinions that will come your way.

Remember its YOUR day and opinions that are not accompanied by a check are not valid.

  • I totally agree with M1ssJ.... TRUST US... WE have ALLLLLL..  been there.. and the funny thing is ..you will continue to do that.. you will have your moment of frustration and need to take a break... and wanna pull your hair out..lol... BUT ... these women are amazing and they will help you if you have questions, need suggestions, want to VENT.. or if you just need a laugh....

Definitely the budget is major.. then you go from there.. You have time.. so sit back RELAX.. AND enjoy it.. because the time FLIES BY.. and then it's gone...

Get all you two want and what is going to make YOU TWO HAPPY... People are going to give you their opinion whether you ask or if you don't.... Just take it with a grain of salt and not let it get to you tooo much.. I know better easier said than done... But it's the best advice there is to give...

welcome aboard.. and NICE TO MEET YOU..Laughing

  • Welcome! You still have time, so relax and enjoy being engaged!!

As M1ssJ said, think about the top things you want in your wedding. As long as you and your FI are on the same page, everything will work out!

PP are so right. Budget and remember that its about the two of you. Welcome to the board and we will support ya through it!

BTW, one branch of my family does peach and green for their major celebrations, including 2 weddings. It's always done tastefully. I'm having 80 people as well. Fun times...

  • Welcome and congrats ! I agree with pp. We are here for vents, celebrations of getting things checked off the list, and opinions on whatever and some ideas in how to do things. This is thr best board on TK.
  • Having a wedding consultant is great to have and if she's really working for you she will help keep you on budget. So make sure you have one cause you'll see alot of things that would be nice to have but not budgeted for.

Congratulations to you, enjoy your planning & welcome to AAW

  • @M1ssJ-- we actually had a talk this afternoon, he let me know the people he would like to come but then he got crazy talkin 'bout allll the people he works with that wanna come, this one and that one, etc. I had to remind him (4+times) WE are paying for this....and they will get over it.....because ain't nobody invited us to any weddings.....chile boo.....

@nursing2u--the most important things to ME are food, food and food.... If its not hot, doesn't taste right there will be definate problems....We went to a wedding last year and the reception food was cold, number one no-no......As for FI I'm not sure, I think he wants to please everyone friends, family, etc.

@keyaira04--it started off as 80 but it's climbing, the majority have to travel so we'll see how that goes...80 or below is fine for me...

@nbrown501--Hmmm the planner I'm still iffy on, I don't think I would need one the whole process maybe towards the end to wrap up loose ends...I'm a bit of a control freak and if you're not with my program....I tune out....Imma work on that Smile....
  • Guess I was typing a novel....but thank you ladies for welcoming me and you all will definately be hearing from me....I have so many things to learn...
  • Welcome to the AAW Board...by far THE BEST BOARD ON TK for all things wedding and LIFE! Congrats on your engagement and choosing a date, colors and an approximate guest count. Yay for a September bride!  I agree with previous posts (pp). You will receive much feedback, opinions, comments, and questionable looks while you are planning. LOL! It's all part of the territory. Just remember, these ladies have a wealth of knowledge and are willing to help you along your journey through wedding planning and your life during wedding planning. It can get rough sometimes, but remain positive and know that the only thing that matters is that you and your future hubby get married...all the other stuff (that we like and obsess over) is extra. Happy planning to you and once again WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!

  • In regards to wedding planner/coordinator:  For my wedding coordinator, I made sure I had complete design and concept control over everything. I basically, called her in when I was done planning or rather all vendors were chosen and the design/concept for the wedding was complete (and I did all this in a few months--engaged in March 2012, married Sept 2012).

However, I definitely needed someone for the month of to make the phone calls, set up arrival times, make sure wedding party and vendors arrived on time, etc...basically doing the leg work I didn't want to do LOL! She made sure everything was in order, checked my programs to make sure wording was correct, helped in informing me the correct order of how things should go, etc. On the day of the wedding, she took care of everything as I had planned it. So, with that being said, you may definitely benefit from a Day of or Month of Coordinator. You may have entirely too much to do the weeks coming up...of course this all depends on how organized you are and if you have last minute things to do or not.
