*Book Club* Questions Pt.1

1- Murrow's orders to Frankie is "Get in. Get the story. Get out."  Does the Postmistress make you question whether it's possible to ever get the whole story? Or to get out?

2- When Thomas is killed, Frankie imagines his parents sitting miles away, not knowing what has happened to their son and realizes there's no way to tell them.  Today, it's rare that news can't be delivered.  In this age of news 24/7, are we better off? Why or why not?

3- "Seek truth, report it, minimize harm" That's the journalists code.  It haunts Frankie during the book.  Why wasn't Frankie able to deliver the letter or tell Emma about meeting Will? For someone whose job is to deliver the news, did she fail?

  • 1- Murrow's orders to Frankie is "Get in. Get the story. Get out." Does the Postmistress make you question whether it's possible to ever get the whole story? Or to get out? I don't think a journalist can ever get the whole story, 100%, at least not in one event, day or "sitting" and especially not in the middle of a war.

2- When Thomas is killed, Frankie imagines his parents sitting miles away, not knowing what has happened to their son and realizes there's no way to tell them. Today, it's rare that news can't be delivered. In this age of news 24/7, are we better off? Why or why not? I think we are better off.  I much rather know something that might hurt me, such as finding out someone has passed away, than not knowing what happened to that loved one.

3- "Seek truth, report it, minimize harm" That's the journalists code. It haunts Frankie during the book. Why wasn't Frankie able to deliver the letter or tell Emma about meeting Will? For someone whose job is to deliver the news, did she fail?  I think she did fail, but I also think that she was so changed from her travels in Europe and what she had seen and then when she came back to North America and saw how people were still going about their day as though nothing had changed, she felt that she was a failure.  Her entire mission going to Europe was to make people want to be up-in-arms about what was happening on the other side of the ocean, but people were acting like everything was no different. Like they were untouchable, or they were just stories in the paper or on the radio, they weren't actually happening to people.
