Guest List and Proposal

My venue has catering services. Food and beverage costs are included in the contract. How do you determine how many people will RSVP prior to them RSVPing for venue proposal purposes. Once you submit a total for a certain number of guests, you are not able to get a refund or credit. What did you do?

I originally gave myself a budget of what I was willing to spend. I then looked at venues that fit in that number. When it came to choosing a number I just didnt want a BIG wedding so I went the middle ground with 100 people. Initially wanted only 60 but since my parents are paying for it I had to increase the number.

It really does depend on what you're comfortable spending and a guesstimate of the amount of people you expect.

I sent out an email to all of my friends to get their mailing address for the invites. I also asked if they might be bringing a plus 1. That helped me get a round about number.

Can you go higher than the number you give but not lower? I had one venue tell us that if we say we are going to have 50 people we had to pay for 50 people and no less but if we had more than 50 we paid for the total that actually showed up.
