Cocktail hour?

If you're having a cocktail or even, say you're a guest of a wedding with a cocktail hour, how many apps would you expect before a full meal? Right now FI and I are planning on simple ones: Swedish meatballs, cocktail shrimp, and a veggie tray. I'm trying to figure out if the veggie tray is necessary.

I don't think the veggie tray is necessary unless you have a lot of people who don't eat meat.

I talked to our caterer/venue and when I asked about a veggie tray they said that it usually goes largely un-touched at receptions. I would replace it with Mini quiche or another vegitarian option

I agree with the pp. We are having a cocktail hour before a full meal and are only having 2 apps. I don't think the veggie tray is necessary.

Were having four, but only because we have a lot of different "dietary issues". Generally it doesn't matter how many options you have but they say 4 pieces per guest. I definitely agree with nixing the tray, most people eat whats passed not whats sitting.

i think 4 is a good number, but 3 will work...and yes, veggie tray is necessary. non-vegetarians eat vegetarian food too ;)

my caterer also said that the veggie tray often goes untouched. I would save yourself some money. No one is going to say, omg, where is the veggie tray. Especially when a meal is coming. :0)

Personally, I'd replace the veggie tray with another vegetarian-friendly passed app (spanikopita, maybe?). I like to see 3-4 apps, mostly for the variety. If there were only 2 options, I probably wouldn't really notice.

I eat a ton of veggies and I think it's a nice gesture to have a veggie option (for omnivores and herbivores!) but I agree with PP-- if they have an alternate veggie option that fits in your budget, you might want to go that.  Even though I love veggies, I never look forward to the veggie tray.

We're probably doing more than we need. We have three tray passed apps (one fish, one veggie, and one other that I can't remember right now LOL) and one display of Mediterranean spreads with pita and various breads and grilled veggies during the cocktail hour. I think that, in your case, the veggie tray or fruit would be good since the only other options are meat/fish.
