*Book Club* Questions Pt. 4

10- Why is the certificate of virginity so important to Iris? What does this tell us about her character?

11- Martha Gellhorn is quoted at the beginning of the book.  " War happens to people, one by one.  That is really all I have to say, and it seems to me I have been saying ir forever." What stance towards war, and of telling a war story does this reveal? How does it inform your reading of The Postmistress?

12- Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not? Would you recommend it?  What's your overall opinion of the book?

When I first started reading, I love the book. I thought the character of Emma was thoroughly fleshed out - as well as Frankie, the radio gal. I felt myself being drawn into their worlds and feeling what they might be feeling.

As the book continued on, I became dissatisfied with the story. It felt very mundane and border-line boring as the story seemed to go nowhere and was just...stagnant with little no climax or resolution.

I think the death of Will, a rather minor character in the big scheme of the story, was the turning point from great story to mediocre at best.  After his death, everything just seemed so darn pointless.

I didn't understand her purpose in writing this book - and to top it off - what purpose did the death of Henry Vale serve? It was like she got bored and decided "Hey, let's kill this character".

Who was the main character in this book? Frankie? Iris? Emma? All of them? It felt spread far too thin towards the middle to truly grasp any one story.

What does this tell us about her character?I think it tells us that she may not have had very high self-esteem in herself.  That she felt like a man would only want her if she had a piece of apper that documents that she was a virgin and "pure'

What stance towards war, and of telling a war story does this reveal? How does it inform your reading of The Postmistress? war affects everyone and it effects generations after the war.

12- Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not? Would you recommend it? What's your overall opinion of the book? I did enjoy this book. It was different than what I normally read but I enjoyed that it had some history in it and gave a different point of view of the war instead of the regular soldier just trying to survive.
