Cake topper: WWYD? (maybe long)

So, found a custom wedding cake topper that I liked on Etsy and contacted the person who makes it back at the end of July about some info.  She stated that she was booked for a couple months but asked me to convo her before I paid for anything to make sure she had time to do it.  I showed pics of the topper style to the cake baker and she's planning on tweaking her design a bit to match that of the topper.  Anyhow, so I figured I had time, go to check on the topper again yesterday and was going to put down a payment on one to get it going even though I still have plenty of time and come to find out that the price of the toppers has since nearly DOUBLED!  Umm...wow.  So I convoed the seller because, seriously, if I had known she was going to double the price, I would have bought back when I first convoed her.  She says she can't really do anything because everyone is now paying the nearly $200 price for the custom toppers.  Should I go for it or not?  I'm so damn bummed!  I know it's just a stupid cake topper, but we were going to have it where FI was holding onto a motorcycle helmet.

If it was me i wouldn't do it and figure something else out. I do think that wasn't very Fair of her and she should have offered you the lower price. If it is really important to you go for it but i would not do it.

That's a lot of money for a cake topper...IMO. But if you really love it and think you could find a way to use it (display it) or something after the wedding, I'd go for it. Otherwise, I'd plan for something else while you have time.

I think it depends on how important the topper is to you. If it were me I would probably look for an alternative....but I'm also super budget conscience so that would be the biggest factor for me. =)

I wouldn't do it Tygirl. Just keep looking, there are so many options out there and I'm sure you could find a way to incorporate his motorcycle someway. I am really sorry that she won't honor the price that she had when you originally spoke. She asked you to talk to her in a few months, that is hardly fair to not honor the price you were ready to pay in July. I've learned that people have terrible customer service these days. Especially when it comes to weddings. They either have the best or the worst. Lame!

I wouldn't pay $200 for a cake topper. I think that is pure insanity, but we all have our things. Mine was boxed invites. =)Can you find someone else on Etsy who could make it for cheaper?

Well, when we first got engaged, I looked at cake toppers (again, I research into virtually EVERYTHING) and saw these custom ones that were nice, but the guy charges like $2k (yes, you read right) although apparently it is now $3k.  But, insanely good detail and can do whatever you like - ideally it would have FI and I riding his track bike in our wedding attire.  But no way in hell would I spend that much on a cake topper.  So I saw some on Etsy that were nice but cartoonish  and this lady's They were both around the same range, and liked the second one better.  I guess I just need to weigh the pros and cons.  It just really irks me that people are like that.  And correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you do an achlemy on Etsy and no one else will know what the agreed upon price is?

Oh, that's annoying. I'd probably take my business elsewhere just on principle.

Just because she did that and won't offer it to you when you wanted to purchase it. I say NO. Who is going to know that you paid what she was asking for it at the time that you talked with her. Thats ridicolous for a cake topper.

That sucks! I wouldn't pay that much for a topper, but this is your wedding and your executive decision! So if you absolutely HAVE to have it, then that's your decision. But, I have seen a motorcycle couple cake topper, you probably have seen it, but it's through Wedding Star.I hope it showed up! But this is it.

Yay! It showed, so the website is Weddingstar.com and it's a great website/magazine. Tons of stuff in it for great prices. Hope that helps!

i'd say no. she should've honored the previous price because she was the one to tell you to order at a later time. i've had a few etsy sellers do that for me, no problem. there are other etsy sellers out there that can make you a topper. i bet there are some new ones that were not even there when you first searched.

she should've honored the previous price because she was the one to tell you to order at a later time.Totally agree. She could have had you pay through Paypal or something if she was afraid listing it. (Or Alchemy, like you said, but I don't know anything about how that works.)

i just did a quick search and found these:http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25705962&ref=sr_list_3&&ga_search_query=clay+cake+topper+wedding&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=2&order=date_desc&includes[]=tags&includes[]=titlethey're a bit more cartoonish, but i think they're cute!

It's not that she wouldn't sell it to me at that time, it's just that she typically is booked already a couple/few months out and in her reply back in July she said (and I quote): "If you're planning on waiting a while before ordering, would you send me a convo first, so I check to see if your date's available?"  I understood that as basially it's fine to wait, just contact her prior to make sure she's not totally booked - and I wasn't worried about that because at that time I was a year out!  Oi...maybe I can get her to include shipping in the cost?  Because that plus the helmet brings the total difference in price down to $50 which is easier to swallow.

IF you can get her to bring the price down to that $50 variance, then ok, but otherwise, I would find someone else. Seriously. What's the sellers name? I want to look at some of her stuff and what materials she uses. What size do these end up being? I mean, our cake topper will be about $200, but it's a full on swarovski crystal sculpture!

This is selfish, but this post makes me glad I just bought my cake topper even tho I thought it was still suuuuuper early to do it, and made me ok with the $45 it cost me.  It's two little felt birds with hearts on their tummies and they were so stinkin cute I couldn't resist.  I got em on etsy from feltmeupdesigns.tygirl - $200 for a cake topper for me would be too much for me.  But it is true that everyone has their thing, so if this is it for you, then it's your call.

I agree with PPs. Don't do it. It's ridiculous that she won't honor the price from when you first contacted her (and that she charges $200 for a cake topper anyway...). Do an Alchemy request and get a reasonable price.
