    I like your advice about wedding planning. It's just one day and I am retooling my thinking to mirror that. The marriage is what's important.

    You and I have the same colors. Please do post pics when you get back. I'd like to get some ideas since I still have a ways to go.

    So why did you decide to join a sorority? I ask because I started the process and dropped out for personal reasons. Just curious to know why.

    Also, how long have you had natural hair?

    I enjoyed reading about you.  My hair is natural too.  I've been wearing my hair in its natural state for almost 11 years now.  Have you ever heard of a forum/site called Curlynikki.com?  If not, you should consider joining it.  How are you wearing your hair for your wedding?  You mentioned that you have made your corporate co-workers accept your natural hair.  Have you had issues in the past for wearing your hair natural?  What are some of the crazy comments you've heard since you've been wearing your hair natural?

    Loved reading about you. I looked at Sandals Resort, too.

    What made you want to pledge Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.? {Asking as a college student that thinks she's ready to pledge....}

    My mom started wearing her hair natural. I applaud you all, because I can't do it! lol

    I was groomed to be a Delta, LOL! My aunt is a Delta and my high school mentor was a Delta as well. The sisterhood and public service of the sorority is what makes it so awesome. Not only that, but you make some lifetime bonds with your line sisters as well. I wouldn't trade it for the world. Now I have cousins who are Deltas as well and we are grooming the little ones. It's an awesome organization.

    As far as my natural hair is concerned, I've been natural about 2 years and my hair stretched out is about shoulder length. I work in corporate america where there are not many blacks in management, so anything out of the norm may alert people of different races. I get stares from other black women and some whisper to me "I love your hair". Other races think that my hair is cool and they are amazed at how much I change it up with the styles. I think that black women feel the pressure to "fit in" more than any other race, but there is nothing like loving who God made you and allowing others to appreciate it as well. I have nothing against relaxers, but I'm a biologist and I believe that hair products play a major role in cancers and tumors.

    Natural hair is very easy to manage...once you figure out which products your HAIR LIKES...not the products you like LOL! I get more crazy looks from black people than anyone else. However, I live in Atlanta and natural hair is extremely common, so I don't feel out of place when I'm out and about. I love my hair and I love it more when people stop me and ask a million questions. I get more compliments on my natural hair than I did when it was relaxed.

    For the wedding, I'm getting micro twists and wearing them in a bun. I'm not taking a chance with that Jamaican heat, water and humidity!

    What are the different hairstyles that you've tried and have you ever heard of a site called curlynikki.com?
  • edited December 2011
    I usually wear my hair in twist-outs or a blown out fro. When I wear twist-out, sometimes I pin it up and the sides into a fro-hawk, put a headband on or wear it wild all over the place. I've never heard of curlynikki.com. However, I usually check out the natural profiles on fotki.com...those ladies are the truth!

    I love reading about you!!! We like the same movie as well. I like the advice you gave us. I think sometimes we get so wrapped up in the wedding planning we forget about the actual marriage. So I am glad you posted that most of all. Thanks for sharing.
