I think as long as you let people know in advance, it should be fine.  Our ceremony starts at 7pm and we are eating dinner at 8:20pm.  So we're not that far from your schedule. Our cocktail hour starts at 7:30pm and lasts for 45 minutes, so guests will actually start eating 30 minutes after they arrive.

What is happening between 8:30-9pm at your wedding?

I think it sould be fine. I agree with the PP about informing guests. I wish ours could be a little later but we only have our venue until midnight.

    If I were a guest, I wouldn't care. I would just eat a small snack before I went. I'm always hungry...lol.

I am getting married on a Friday.  We are actually splitting the cocktail hour.. 30 min before and after the ceremony.  Starting at 6:45 for those coming straight from work.  Ceremony will start at 7:15 end at 7:45... more cocktails while we take pictures.  Guests are seated for our entrance and first dance at 8:15. Dinner service to begin around 8:30 ish.  So a half hour more should be OK since you are serving food before.

Food is food I think. You are having a party until the wee hours so you can push dinner back a little. You aren't starving anyone, it should go just fine.
