2012 Brides - Your Gown - What Are Your Plans?

Hey fellow 2012 brides.  When do you plan on looking for "the One"?

I have seen quite a few gowns that I would love to see up close and personal but I refuse to start shopping now.  I know if I do, I am going to see something else that I love when the new collections come out later this year or even early next year.  I personally don't want to become a multi-dress bride.

Thus, I am trying to hold off until late this year before I get out there trying on gowns.  Right now I just want to have fun looking at all the gowns online and in books to see what type of shape/style, fabric, color, train, designer, etc. appeals to me.  Then armed with a vision I am heading to the bridal salons.

What are you doing regarding "the One"?

Im not a 2012 Bride but I can understand where youre coming from.  When I went dress shopping in September, specifically at DB, I was told that I should not make a hasty decision since their new line would come out in December. But at the same time it happened that I found my dress when I least expected it at a bridal show.
So it all depends.  My best friend found her dress 1 1/2 years prior to her wedding and there was no changing her mind.  If you find it waay before, you find it.  Also new line dresses are much more expensive then previous seasons.

Well .. for now the plan is to start looking in a few months because my mom and I live a couple of hours apart.  I originally wanted to hold off until a year before but I am getting that itch now.  I think we are just going to start casually looking at a few things and then make some appointments to start dress shopping in the spring/summer.  I do have my eye on a Mori Lee and I really love the rouched, fit and flare style.  Preferably organza or chiffon.

@sadou02 - Good point on the increase in pricing when the new lines come out.  That is something to take into consideration.

happy2gether - Itch is not the word! LOL!  There are some beautiful gowns out there.

I also have a weight goal.  So I need to hit that before I try on gowns.  Trying on the gowns is my reward for making it to my weight goal.  Once I get into the gown and the size is ordered, then I MUST make sure I keep the weight off.  Hmmm...that's a reason to get the gown sooner rather than later I think.  Hee-Hee.

I had a weight goal.  They wanted to order a larger size for me but I wouldnt allow it because I wanted to wear a dress size I wore before, so I made it my goal to lose the weight to fit in the size. I still have a little more to lose but Im practically there.
SN: I haven't bought new clothes to fit what my weight gain cause I didnt want to submit to going up to sizes. So I have clothes here as a reminder of where I need to be and I cant wear them till I shrink just a bit.

Well, considering that the dress that I fell in love with was a dress that MANY ofther brides fell in love with, I have decided that I will probably get my dress made...

I dont want ANYONE to have my dress...

My mom had her dress made for her 50th birthday party and I plan on using her lady...

I will see what styles, etc I like and then go from there...

I don't plan on really looking for The One until around Dec. I live in IL and my wedding is in VA where I'm from and I want my mother and grandmother to be apart of my dress shopping and I won't be home to get a lot of stuff done until my winter break. I have an idea on what style I want and everything but I wont start trying anything on till then

I'm looking now. Im hoping to find the one and then wait until it goes on sale to purchase her. I've tried on at least 30 dresses. I am planning to order by Spetember for my May 2012 wedding, some designers take up to 6 months to get the dress so I want enough time for everything to go smoothly

As a designer (hoping to go into bridal design within the next year as well) I'd recommend keeping up to date with what styles you like, look at a variety of designers.  Even if you don't want a top end designer dress each designer has a different style so if you're having something made from scratch you've got a better idea of the details you like and don't like.  It means when you go to try on the gowns you'll have a very clear idea of what you're looking for.  Don't be afraid to ask the staff for help or input even if you don't agree with their suggestions.  They've still seen many women try on gowns and likely know what silhouettes suit each body type well. I'd say don't leave it later than 3 months before the wedding because you may need time to get the dress altered and a seamstress will have other orders so she might not be able to fit you in right away and will likely want at least 2-3 fitting to ensure its perfect for you.  You might also want to look earlier if you think they'll need to order in your size.  But the problem with looking too early is if you loose or put on weight nearer the time its a nightmare to continually alter and constant altering and moving of the seams can weaken and damage the fabric. Hope that was helpful for you! :)
