Did you/Are you...

register for fine china? I am torn. The sets that I like are super expensive and I'm beginning to think that I may not actually get the use out of them to justify the cost. To say I'd use them for holidays would require me to register for or buy even more. What do you think? My family does the family dinner thing, but isn't really super formal.

ETA: The link to the set that I think I like best...although none of them particularly moved me.

We may get another set FI has some already that his mother bought for him as a housewarming gift about three years ago.

Yeah...we have a couple of sets of everyday china that are really nice. However, I feel greedy registering for $195 per place setting. We'd need at least 10 if we were to actually use them for our families...the daggum platter is $278. I guess I just wonder if anybody does this anymore. It seems extreme.

We're not doing it.  I doubt we will have enough dinner parties, etc. to justify the cost, we don't want to ask guests to pay that much for a gift, all of our visitors would probably be more comfortable using "every day" dishes and I don't like most of the patterns anyway.  It just doesn't make sense for us, but for a couple that is more formal and entertains a lot (and has friends/family with money! LOL) it might be a good idea.

We did not. But thats because DH and I never lived together & we needed functional items like a microwave before we moved onto fine china. In the end, I'm glad we didn't because toward the end we were running out of items on the registry & people were buying us the unattractive but still needed items like an iron & ironing board. LOL

My advice is, if you NEED other items, don't register for the china. If you have most things but are registering for a few items, then yes, go for it.

Thanks for the input...my mama and aunt also provided some and the consensus is that I can skip the fine china. :)

We registered for the everyday white china. That way I can always buy holiday/patterned salad plates and they'll still match. And like you, it would take 10 sets to accommodate our families and that can be a bit much. But, I DID register for fine flatware. The regular stuff gets scratched way too easily! It's $50/placesetting so I'm reaalllly hoping we get close to completing the 10 we asked for.

We registered for every day china. We figured when would we use the fancy expensive ones. When we have dinner parties, our friends love our regular china.

I registered for the flatware as well for this exact reason. Good idea about just customizing the salad plates. The funny thing about most of our everyday white china is that we chose really modern shapes...rectangular and such. Maybe I will put a set of round on so that I can customize the holiday plates with ease. Thanks!

If you like the modern look, check out mixing round with the square. The lady in BB&B pulled a sample for me and it's really striking. But, we're just not that cool in real life.

Personally I would not, because thats extreme for me, and I know my guests and I doubt that they will buy them.  But if that is what you want, GO FOR IT.  its your day.  They will either buy them or not.
