Anyone rent their dress or bought pre-owned or planning to?

Even with how funny I am, I'm considering this. My grandma will have a fit since she wants to buy my dress but I would rather save that extra money or put it elsewhere.

Besides, we will only wear the dress once right?

  • I bought mine new. I looked in to pre-owned, but I didn't find anything that I liked in my size. Have you found one that you like?

    So the not so brief backstory is that I made my first bridal appointment at Kleinfelds.  my preconceived expectation about their price range was such that I had no business walking through the door.  But and however, I work in Manhattan so I didn't have an excuse not to at least try, nothing beats a failure but a try right?  I was gonna stand my ground *clenches fists* and get it right on outta my system.   My consultant was Keisha (the black lady you've seen on Say Yes).  A sweetheart.  I digress.  She said tell me about your wedding and describe your budget.   The last dress she brought in, made me say O.   nothing else, no editorial, no clowing, I just stopped talking and my system emitted one single vowel.  I'm not embarrassed to tell you before tax, tucks, and extras, it was nearly 7 grand.  6300 b/c the designer was there for a trunk show and no tax b/c it would've been shipped to jerz.  Like I said not my budget, but not shocking in this part of the country.   Compared every dress since to the original She.   About 3 weeks ago I spotted it on preowned on a bride married in March.  She's my height, street size, made all the alterations I would have and she lives in NJ but the weird part was, it came in 3 different color ivories, the one for me is closest to a champagne.  I'd seen it listed by other brides before but each time I'd headshake thinking I want it all or nothing.    the very long winded point i'm making is if more brides were willing to recycle, more of us could afford what we really wanted, no settling at a decent cost.   In the supply and demand column, it might actually force couture designers to knock off their shenanigans.  Shouldn't no dress cost more than my first damn car!  She sold it to me for less than 1/2 what she paid.  And yes ma'am, when I'm done, I'm releasing her back into the wild too.

    sorry Foot in mouth that was waaaaaaay more than you bargained for.  lol.

  • Sultry (I can't see your name since your planner is private), I like your talk style! lol

    I work and live in Brooklyn so I think I'm going to take a day off (or a Saturday) to go to Kleinfelds and start my bargain shopping.

    Question: When you went there did you give them a "realistic budget" or did you embellish a bit?

    Thanks for your experience and the pep talk :)

    I agree with sultryzulu (who makes me laugh with each new post!). My mom had her dress sitting the closet for years. So does my MOH after 4 years; I told her to sale that bad boy!

    Long story short, my dress is pre-owned. I saw my dress at DB for 1200, then on sale for 700. Found it on WB in my same size, color, already dry-cleaned and (Thank you Jesus) zip code for $450. It's perfect. There are minor things I need to fit, but I really nothing my mom can't fix.  I would love to resell it, but I'm getting it made into a quilt afterwards.

    T, If i had a girlcrush it would be you.  {{tacklehug}}

    Lolz @ kita - jacking your own thread.  the funniest.   thanks luvie.  my name is Bongi, you're never gonna remember it, sing the song to B-i-n-g-o and Bingo was her name O, then switch the vowels.   (i know, don't say it) lol.   I made the planner private after *meeting* the chicks on the SB boards.

    If you decide to go to Kleinfelds, you will love it.  they get a lot of hype and personally I think the showroom is a little overrated - but the level of service is outstanding.  I ran into Randy in the stockroom and damn near queened out.   No I didn't embellish a bit, I embellished A LOT lol.  I started at the top of my "if money were no object range" because I thought the hardest part of dress shopping (for me) was finding what looks best on you, whether or not I could afford it is an entirely different animal, but what bridal consultants won't tell you of course is that if you find the design, you can work getting that dress from somewhere else.  It's a blessing for me because my designer is exclusive to Kleinfelds so the only other place I was gonna find it was from another bride.

    Thanks for your experience and the pep talk :)

    ay, thas how we do round here.  anytime chica!

  • lol, well it's true.  we bumped right into each other and I said something really intelligent like: oooh, ooh, you're Randy!  he laughed and said you look like an actress....I said Neicey Nash?  he said no.  I said (hoping/reaching) do you know who Theresa Randle or Lela Rochon is?  on really good days and in my sunglasses lol, I get them sometimes, he shook his head and said you know what I cant think of her name.  I said Randy you're fired.  He's super nice.
  • I bought my dress from a sample sale. Originally priced over $2000, and I got it for $550. I paid $200 for alterations and cleaning. I feel wonderful about it. Even though I love my dress I would have had buyers remorse if I spent $2K for a dress I would wear once. I don't understand how the girls on "Say YES to the dress" can spend $5K + especially when most of the dresses aren't all that!

    My dress was 1,250 retail. My mom was going to buy my dress, I didn't want her to spend that kind of money. I went on preowned and got it from another bride in my size and a full skirt  for $450. It does not need alterations either....#Winning
