Protected Power

I went to visit my granny this weekend and as usual we talked (well more like she talked and I listened… I’m always fascinated with her stories and learning about my heritage). In any event, she began to tell me about the storm that came through this past winter where the neighborhood lost power. As she spoke I began to visualize the entire neighborhood without power but I was jolted back to reality when I heard her say, “since our power lines are buried, we seldom lose power… and if we do we know it will come back on soon.” I literally jumped up looking for a pen and paper. I was so excited because God was using yet another illustration to minister to me. Granny continued with her story and it ended something like this: Her power was restored before her neighbors power was. Her neighbors, who had 5 children, took turns sleeping in the car to keep warm while my granny was resting in the comfort of her home. After speaking to her neighbors and finding out that they were powerless her response was, “well if I had known you didn’t have power you could have connected to my house and at least had heat.”

There are two lessons in this:

Amazingly, this is exactly how being connected to God is. He is our power source. A relationship with Him guarantees our power lines are buried beneath the rock that is Christ Jesus just as underground power lines are buried deep beneath the Earth’s surface to protect them from the storms. Have you ever noticed that people who’s power lines are unprotected (visible) tend to lose power EVERY time there is a storm. What about spiritually? Do you find yourself losing faith every time adversity comes? The storm may be large or small but because the lines (or us as people without God) aren’t built to withstand those conditions they lose power.

It took years for engineers to figure out that if you protect the lines connected to the source power is less likely to be lost. It took lots of trial and error to figure out just how deep the power source needed to be buried. Power lines aren’t buried in the superficial soil just below the Earth’s surface. They are buried deep in the rock of the Earth. How long will it take to recognize that your power source needs to be protected? How deep is your power source buried? I’m guilty of placing my power source in superficial places. I have placed people, places, and things on the same level as my power source… only to find out that they weren’t strong enough to sustain me when things got tough. However, I now rejoice in knowing that Jesus is my power protector. I have faith in my power source and where my power is buried that even if I waiver on my walk I know that my power will be restored. Do you have that same faith? Find out what your power source is and make sure it's in a protected place.
