NY Brides

Hey Ladies,
I'll be visiting NY next week for a overnight trip.Flying out to do some Christmas Shopping with my girls. We will be staying at the 4 point Sheraton in Long Island. What's a good place to get soul food from besides Sylvia's ? Good Place for breakfast ?
We will be getting around by subway, bus and cab.Any information is appreciated.
Thanks In Advance

Re: NY Brides

  • There is Amy Ruth's. There are also a lot of smaller, less known soul food restaurants. IMO soul food restaurants in NYC are nothing special. Also, it depends what area of the city you want to get the soul food as there are places in all the boroughs and also Long Island.

Breakfast...Melba's (has eggnog waffles and fried chicken) in Harlem
-again, it depends on what type of breakfast you are looking for..Most of the other breakfast spots I know are in brooklyn.

d I agree with gelaine, it's specific to your personal taste.  honestly the *best* soul food probably isn't gonna be in a directory, it'll be a lil juke joint in a neighborhood that looks kinda sketchy.  In the meantime, here's a comprehensive list.  My unbiased opinion is that you'll hear a lot about sylvias, simply because it's the most well known, but (again imo) it's way overrated.  way.  I'd recommend trying the Red Rooster which is actually a block or two away from Sylvias (near 125th street in Harlem).   If you go there though, make your reservation now, trying to get a table in there isn't a game.

while we're on it, what else isn't a game is trying to get around nyc :)  - click on this map link.  if you're travelling on public transportation, just stay cognizant of what borough you need to get to from the borough you're in.  to get back and forth between long island and any other nyc borough for example, you'd have to take an LIRR (long island rail road) train into manhattan and then navigate the nyc bus/subway system from that point.  as you mentioned you could of course consider a taxi, it's just kinda expensive.  Sorry to ramble, i'm almost done.  Manhattan is the only nyc borough that's a math grid, if you're on 20th street and you wanna go to 40th street, you're going uptown, conversely, if you're on 125th street and you're going to 59th street, you're going downtown.  Doesn't work that way in any of the other boroughs so take your time and study the maps before ya'll head out.

Hope you have an awesome stay!
