Ice cream bar?

Has anyone been to a wedding that's had an ice cream bar?  I'm really toying with the idea of having one since my wedding's on July 2 and it's going to be hot.  I think it'll be fun for the guests and a nice surprise.  My only concern is that it may be messy.  Also, when do you think I should open the bar?  My wedding's at 5pm and my reception starts at 7.  I'm afraid of serving it during the cocktail hour because I think it may be a bit heavy on their stomachs before dinner, plus I'd like for people to have it as dessert and for them to have something other than cake.  Do you think that I should have the ice cream available around 9pm or is that too late?  Do you know if this is something that's pricey?

That sounds cool.  I know there is a company here in Central Florida that does a gelato (Italian ice-cream) bar at weddings. They do all the serving and everything.  Maybe you can check to see if there is a company like that where you are.  I saw the one here at a bridal show.  I think if you put it out around when you do the cake cutting it would give guest a choice.

What time is your reception to? I would open it probably around the time cake is being served so people have the option of both or just one.

Cute idea. I ditto pp about trying to find a company to handle it for you. If that isn't an option, maybe go through your caterer or even the baker to see if they can work it in for you.

    Awesome idea!

I would open it later... either during the cake or as a late-night snack.

Thanks ladies!  My reception is scheduled to go from 7pm-12am, so I was thinking it might be better to have it later on in the night.  I haven't decided yet if I want to have a sundae bar or if I want to pick 4 different flavors, but I have plenty of time to decide on that.  Eagles, that's a good idea to see if my baker can add it on.  I never even thought of that.
