African American Weddings

Im American, he's Nigerian (Yoruba) HELLLPP!!

My husband and I got married hastily here in Virginia. His family is all in Nigeria. We are taking our time planning and saving money to have a wedding that will include both families. The wedding will be here in the states, but I can't get any input from him as to ideas for mixing the two cultures. I want to include food, music, and decor that pays homage to both of our cultures, but I don't know where to get inspiration or ideas. Does anyone here know anything about traditional Yoruba weddings? Since we are technically already married, there are a few pre-wedding rituals that won't be neccessary. But I want to pay respect to his culture and make sure both familes are comfortable. For example, in Nigeria, food is typically eaten with the hands. So I was thinking of offering a mixed menu of traditional foods from both cultures, along with descriptions of the foods and brief descriptions of how each dish is eaten. I want to encourage both sides to try something new, as well as avoid any awkward situations where someone isn't sure how to eat something. Other than that and adding some African decor, I am really lost. What types of ceremonies are neccessary to take place before the wedding? What do I expect from his family as far as monetary contribution and/or participation in the planning? Any help that anyone can offer would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!!

Sorry I'm not on here everyday like before but I'm REALLY enjoying every minute of married life.

But anyhoo yes ma'am. I spent countless hours studying the Yoruba culture and I honestly can say that I know more about the culture than my husband. LOL!

We had basically two receptions in one. We did not do the traditional engagement but we had the white wedding and changed into the traditional clothes at the reception. We had an American band play during dinner and a Nigerian DJ play while we changed clothes and danced out again.

You can look on YouTube and find many Nigerian receptions. Some tips I can give you is to show your respect for his family. Make sure they and close family friends are at a VIP table. If you are having a buffet make sure they are fed first. Respect is very important and they celebrate the joining of two families and not just the couple.

Have you met his parents yet? I'm about to generalize now, but since you said your husband has not said much about the culture I assume he may not have followed all the traditions that are put in place before the marriage. If i'm right you must work hard to make sure his family is comfortable. We also had two buffets, one with Nigerian food and one with American food. I would have the silverware available and let your guests decide if they use it or not.

Everyone enjoyed the wedding and loved how we incorporated everything. PM me if you have any other questions.

  • I am marrying a man from Nigeria and he is Yoruba. I am getting awesome info from him and from pinterest but I have NO clue how to wrap my head, get the fabric for my wedding attire and bridal train. Pleas someone help me! I love the food so that is already done, my mom wrote out my bridal list for him and his family and we are planning to fly to Nigeria for either an engagement party or a wedding party. I am trying to keep it equally celebrated but I could definitely use the assistance.
