It depends on your culture, my fiance explained to me that his side of the family doesn't buy gifts because they are used to an offering at the wedding. They expect it. Typically people bring cash as a giift. I hadn't heard of this until I went to his cousins wedding and they collected offering. The couple probably had 10 -12 big baskets of cash. She ended up telling me they collected 7K at the church.
The offering was done after the pastor preached similar to church. My Vietnamese friend also had an offering. She said in her culture it is expected that guests help the couple with their house down payment so no one buys gifts. Everyone brings cash.

This is news to me, I have never seen or heard about a church offering during a wedding ceremony. I would probably pass the plate right along when it was handed to me...lol

The one I went to I was pretty annoyed. They asked for a collection towards their building fund! I was like what?!!! I thought it was tacky but I felt obliged to put something in when the basket came around. I think its different if its going to the couple and everyone knows that
I've heard of it in wedding 'horror' stories. I would be mortified if my church had done that. Then again they did piss me off anyway, so I wouldn't have found it surprising if they had done that.

I sometimes don't even like Pastor's offerings, much less one during a wedding.
