How are you wearing your hair?

I'm a white girl marrying an Indian man. We decided (together) that I'm going to wear a sari for the wedding. Trouble is that I have never worn a sari, and I have no idea how I'm supposed to wear my hair with it.

We're on a shoestring budget, so no money for hair appointments. I need it to be something I can either do myself or be able to teach my mom or sister or best friend to do. My hair is mostly straight with a slight wave to it. At the moment, it's layered with the longest layer just past my shoulders and the shortest just reaching my chin. The wedding is 10 1/2 months away and I expect my hair will be a few inches longer by then.

I think any type of hairstyle would go well with a sari.  I've seen girls do full up-do, half up, or all down.  So, I'd say just go with something that you know you can definintely do on your own.

That being said - I wore a sari for the ceremony and my hair was pulled back in a braid (traditional way for South Indians to wear their hair), but for the reception I wore a lehenga and I wore my hair half up/half down.

I am thinking about several options for hairdos. 1) a simple french twist; 2) a bun; 3) a braid with some floral pieces.

I am sure any way you choose to wear your hair will be beautfiul!

You can do it a million ways.  Are you wearing any kind of headpiece?  If so, then maybe that will help you narrow down your style options.  Like Meghana, I wore my hair in the traditional South Indian style -- parted in the middle with a braid down the back (my hair isn't super long, so the aunties and my MIL attached a fake braid at the end and I went along with it).  Check out the South Asian bio for inspiration, too: http://krishnaswami08.googlepages.com/southasianbio

P.S. Vedika, can you link to the SA bio in your sticky post at the top of the page?  Seems like a lot of new folks don't know about it and the older SA knotties aren't on as much anymore.

I think you should wear it in a style that compliments your face instead of trying to wear it only in certain traditional way. Are you wearing a tikka or other head jewelry?  That might make a difference in how you style your hair.

I do plan on wearing a tikka, so I'll have to part my hair in the middle. I'm not sure if I want to wear it down or up or what. I have an oval-shaped face, so I can do pretty much any hairstyle without a problem. I've got plenty of time to play with hairstyles, but I'm one of those "plan it now so I don't have to worry about it later" types.

FI hates braids (like REALLY HATES them), so a braid is probably out of the question. I haven't seen enough pictures to know how his mom wore her hair.

a low bun or french twist would be elegant..you could also tuck in a simple flower

You can really do anything with Indian clothes.  I had three events and wore my hair three different ways and wore a tikka with each of them.  But I was wearing a lehnga which is a skirt/top/sash thing rather than a sari.  I did change into a south indian sari at the wedding ceremony.  So if you want to get an idea of how my hair looked just to get an idea, have a quick look at my pictures (you can find them in the vendor reviews link or through the wedding website).

For the sangeet, I had a low side ponytail with a side part.  For the wedding I had it all up, parted in the middle.  And for the reception, I had it half up and half down with a side part as well.  All with a tikka.  Hope the pictures help.
