Hey I noticed that you are planning a Sri Lankan ceremony. I was wondering if you were going to have a Poruwa made? If so is your florist doing it or are you having it custom build... I am debating having one because we are probably going to be doing a non denominational wedding but I thought it would be a nice "alter" type peice that ties in the culture. We are also going to be giving away the traditional sweets as well.

Hey Nilaniluv! Sorry about the late reply.  I was at a wedding this weekend.  We're having a Poruwa ceremony but haven't decided how to do the Poruwa.  To save on money, I was going to take our mandap, change the Ganesh backdrop to something non-denominational, and separate the pillars out so that it looks like a semi-circle.  I'm not sure though.  From pictures I have seen online, I don't think it would be difficult to have a florist create one.  My FMIL might know some folks who make poruwas.  Were are you located?  We're doing the full ceremony including the presentation of gifts and the lamp lighting.  I have a few friends who have done a non-denominational ceremony outdoors and included just the lamp lighting to tie in the culture.  We're also giving away traditional wedding cake from Sri Lanka that we're having relatives bring with them. One of the other ways that we are incorporating Sri Lankan culture into the Poruwa ceremony is that I'm wearing a white sari with a veil.   Good luck with the planning!

Yeah we are also doing the cakes but my mom is making them herself. I think all you have to do is change the background to the hanging flowers to make it "poruwa like". We are located in CA so most likely we can find someone. I am a little scared about the lamp lighting ceremony because it is going to be indoors and they have that open flame policy and once it caught fire on some drapery so I might not include it. Have you seen Mrs. Margaritas blog on weddingbee? she did a half Sri Lankan/ Half Indian wedding and it was beautiful. Here pictures and blog are here: http://www.weddingbee.com/author/margarita/ Thanks for the reply, I look forward to seeing your pictures and how you incorporate everything!

That's awesome your mom is making the cake!  I'm currently eating some of my FMIL's date cake which is my favorite...yum!    I like the idea of hanging garlands of flowers.  I love hanging elements so that would help incorporate it.  I'm not Sri Lankan but FI is so I'm learning all the customs and I've found that I'm having problems finding inspiration pics online.  I'm a Weddingbee addict!  Margarita's wedding has been the inspiration for mine because hers is one of the few weddings I've been able to find that was blogged about.  I love her mandap/poruwa, aisle, sari, and everything about her reception.  Do you have any other online resources for poruwa ceremony inspiration?I see that we're getting married two weeks apart!  Keep in touch and hope everything goes well!

Haha actually my date is made up because the knot makes you pick a date, we haven't set a date yet. But I always look at: http://www.bridesofsrilanka.com/ Here are some traditional Poruwa examples they are very elaborate and I don't know if anyone here can imitate them: http://www.bridesofsrilanka.com/charles.htm Hope this helps!
