Help.... My FMIL got me a sari for the reception

Help,
My future mohther in law got me a silk sari for the reception ...
How do I tell her that I don't want to wear a sari to the reception?
Any ideas ...
Should I wear it just for the cocktail hour?
Should I wear it to the reception but then change before we but the cake ?
I have no idea what to do ... and my finacee told me that it is a Bengali tradition ...
any help ... please

Oh that's a problem!!!  I already have premonition that its going to happen to me, and my FMIL and my choices are not even close to similar.  But if she bought it for you, I would really put in the effort of wearing it at some point at the reception to keep the peace per say.  If your FMIL is really cool, you can talk to her and se if she is okay with you not wearing the sari during the reception, but maybe you can wear it in another wedding related festivities or like you said, wear it for a little while and then change into your dress.

When your FI said its a tradition, is it like a must have for the reception or what?

girl, im on the same boat as you. my FMIL wants me to wear one for my US wedding.. But i have another dress in mind that i was planning on wearing for my reception. As of now, the issue is being put on hold. I talked to my FI and asked if i can wear it to our sri lankan wedding, and he said it would mean a lot to his parents and immediate family -who are coming down to our US wedding, if i wore it for the first hour of our reception. But, we'll see how things go. I think you should wear the dress for cocktail hour.

lol yeah thats exactly what he said ... It is a Bengali tradition and his mom and dad spent a whole day trying to find this sari for me ...
I will probably just wear it for the cocktail hour or the first hour of the reception n change ...
    I hope

haha yeah, i decided that im going to wear mine when we make our grand entrance to the reception until after our first dance. the saree that they got for me is extremely beautiful but if i find something that really catches my eye when i go to sri lanka this summer, im probably going to wear that instead.. good luck! :)

I would definitely wear it at some point in the reception.

Wear it for the cocktail reception and change for the rest of it. It's a compromise.
