AH, the seating chart!  The second "fun" part of wedding planning after the guest list!

    What you need:

    - a layout from your venue.  You need to know how the tables are placed, where the front of the room, head tasble, and dance floor are.  Then you know where the important people need to sit.  Usually there are 8-10 people per table.

    - an accurate RSVP list so you know who needs a seat.

    - a chart or spread sheet (I used excel) so that you can move people around and readjust.

Start with the obvious people who you know need to sit in front or near an exit:  At the prime tables you will have your parents, grandparents, close aunts and uncles, etc.  Your friend with the baby proabbly wants to be near an exit.  I set aside a table at the back for the "problem" guests.  Try to seat people with some of their friends and some new people, and try to keep in mind things like gender balance, single v. married, similarities, etc.

We had escort cards on a table near the door for people to find their tables.  My mom said not to use numbers but instead to name the tables.  That way no one gets offended by being at "2" instead of "1" and you don't have to avoid bad numbers.  You can see the table numbers I made in my bio.  For some reason I don't have a pic of the escort cards... will work on that:

I used Tintin book covers.  Some other ideas are places you've been, songs, local tourist spots, local wildlife, whatever you're into.  Raangoli did really creative ones!  Check hers out!

For mine, I'd want my tables to be named after our favorite things. From sports teams to favorite destinations to favorite food. As for escort cards, I was thinking of candles with their names and table number wrapped around the candle holder. Like this.

Aww thanks for the shoutout, Tem!

We did numbers, but numbers based off of old race bibs I had since I am runner. The escort cards were traditional with little bows tied to them to add some visual interest.

Here's a picture of one of the table numbers (I have escort card pictures at home):

Actually, you can see one of the escort cards off to the right hand side of the centerpiece of you look carefully. It has a burgundy bow tied to the right side of it.

Raangoli -- I just love those!  They're so distinctive and humorous... did older people know what they were?

I found a pic with an escort card in it.  My cousin took a photo of her soup LOL:

I made them by printing on a business card template and then gluing the business cards onto orange tent cards.  It was actually fairly fast and easy but I used a lot of glue.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - we made sure the wait staff had a listing of the table numbers and the guests at each table with the table layout so that if someone was lost, it was easy to find where they had to go.

We tried to make it humrous too, like you said - there was a table of doctors, nurses, etc. so I had them seated at table 57, which was the "St. Mary's Hospital 5k".  Another table of serial bachelor friends and their dates were seated at table 748 which was the "Safe Dating challenge 5K" :)

I have roped a lot of our friends into running races with me through the years, so I tried to use bibs from those races that a lot of the folks at the table had done with me. The one in the picture was for the table my friends who did the NJ state sprint tri and another table was friends who ran a half marathon earlier that year together.

I really liked your idea of the Tintin comics, too! Your mom had a good point about people possibly being offended by being sat at a higher number table. She would have fainted at some of our table numbers! One was as high as 12090!

12090 might just be so high as to not count LOL!  I have the usual array of aunts and uncles who get competitive over things like seating at weddings.  Plus, my family and social circle consider 4, 6, 13, and any thing with 4 or 6 in it to be unusable.

I love the idea of the races actually being associated with the guests... especially the serial daters' table LOL!  And I can just picture some auntie saying "What!?! Table 12090?  And what kind of decor is that?"

Temurlang pretty much covers it!!!  Also, Don't forget you don't have to choose their seating for them, but can assign the table and they can seat themselves with who they want.  I know some brides have done it to which seat goes to the guest and that's gonna take a whole lot of work that you might not want.

For table numbers, I want to use pictures of places we have visited together and I saw this great idea where couples took pictures of them holding numbers.  I was so very cute and a great idea, but right now I can't find the pictures.  If I find them, I will post them for you.

My best friend had a smallish wedding (compared to Indian weddings, at any rate) - only about 100 people. They married on the beach and she wanted to carry the theme through the reception (at a beach restaurant, appropriately). We painted the table numbers on big seashells and scattered smaller shells around them.

I am doing this for escort cards:

    http://weddings.theknot.com/Real-Weddings/50499/detailview.aspx?type=3&id=50499

Except with an image of me and fiance with Washington DC in backdrop.

We want to do something similar to this for table numbers to continue with our theme:  http://www.weddingbee.com/2007/07/16/fun-with-numbers/

My only concern is I don't want to seem in love with pictures of myself... and I'm not, lol.  I more enjoy photographs of citiscapes and random things.  So for the table numbers, we will likely just take photographs of various favorite Washington, DC sites ourselves and print on BW w/ pops of color for the table numbers themselves.

I am sort of thinking about desert plants since we're not getting married in AZ like we had wanted. But then I think that might be weird.

FI's cousin did names of famous people in Chicago (they married there). I can't remember what his other cousin did.
