OT: My Grandpa is in the hospital

My mom's dad is apparently Very Very Sick. Been in hospital almost two weeks now with sepsis. His lungs are 2/3 full of mucus that won't drain in its own, so they have to drain it. He can't breathe without severe pain, so he's been on a ventilator for the last week. He's also on a feeding tube (because well, tube down his throat to help him breathe and all). His kidneys have decided to quit working so they're starting dialysis tomorrow. Doctor says the kidneys should regain function once the infection is cleared up.

Prognosis looks good. If he can get off the ventilator by Friday, then he only has to be in the ICU till then. If not, they have to do a tracheotomy, because you can only go so long with a breathing tube. They will move him to a regular room after he's completely off the ventilator (another week or so, they expect, depending on whether or not they have to do that tracheotomy), and then he has another probably three or so weeks in the hospital till the infection is completely gone; he'll be doing pulmonary rehab during that time too. So another month inpatient, and then a month or two at home of rest, PT, and pulmonary rehab with a home health nurse. SHOULD be back to normal (well, what can be considered normal for a 71-year-old man, anyway) by Christmas, but knowing Grandpa as we do, he'll stop resting as soon as he starts to feel better and set himself back. So realistically, probably February before he's completely back to normal.

Thoughts, prayers, good vibes, etc are greatly appreciated, for Grandpa and the doctors, nurses, therapists, and home-health professionals who will have to deal with him. (Grandpa is a very difficult patient who tends to fire his doctors and offend his nurses...)

So sorry to hear this.  T&P for you and your family.  Is he local?

No, he's in Georgia, but it's less than a day's drive from here. 6 hours with bad traffic. My uncle is going up there this afternoonto stay for a week, and my mom and aunt were up there this weekend. The four of them (there's another brother in Alabama) will be taking turns doing weekends up there while he's still in the hospital. I'm going up after he gets home because the hospital has a policy against kids under 12 unless the patient is dying, and I have to take the baby at least because she's still nursing.

My mom just called me. They started Grandpa on dialysis today and everything got worse. Right back to where he was on Friday - total ventilator instead of vent-assisted breathing, back on complete sedation because the pain was unbearable, heart acting up, etc.

Grandpa's wife isn't good at asking questions, so we don't have all the information yet. Mom and her sister and brothers are driving up there now. She said she'll call again this evening or tomorrow morning when they have more answers and will let us all know if we have to make a big family trip up there.

Oh no, I am sorry to hear that the dialysis put him back a few steps. It's tough treatment at first (my dad has been on dialysis for over two years now for end stage renal failure) but I am sure your grandfather will improve with time.

Still sending thoughts and prayers your way!

    Thanks, friends.

My aunt updated us this morning. They're trying dialysis again today with backup blood pressure medicaitons. They're going to try to do it slower this time and see if he can tolerate it. The hope is that he can come through this today without further complications.

Update from Mom: Dialysis was a success! Heart looks good, chest x-rays improving again, breathing easier, back on vent-assisted instead of total vent. Back on track!

So glad to hear it!  Remember to take care of yourself... you've been through so so much lately and then this.

Raangoli -- I didn't realize your dad was that bad?  Sorry to hear that

@Beloved - that's so good to hear! Hopefully he will be home before you know it! Here's hoping for continued improvement!

@Tem - Thanks. It was tough at first, but now it is a part of our lives and my parents daily routine. He has shown great improvement over time, which is a wonderful blessing.
