NWR - So this sari-wrapping thing...

It takes a few tries to figure out. I've wrapped it a few times and haven't quite got the hang of it yet. I've put it away for now, but I'll try again after I get Kidlet to sleep. I'll get FI to take some pictures tomorrow (he's at work till late tonight).

Yeah it takes a few tries. I have no idea how to do it. I am hoping a relative or someone will be able to help me out when the time comes!

PS How did the weekend go with the FMIL?

It went pretty well. She wasn't very talkative overall, but she was sweet to Kidlet - bought him some wheat and milk cookies when we stopped at the Indian grocery down the road from the sari shop and played with him some while I was trying on my blouse to make sure it fit right. That's a start, especially since she'd never really interacted much with him. He's got cerebral palsy and developmental delays, so I think she's mostly been unsure of how to interact with him.

We talked a little about clothes and how hard it was to find anything in the sari shop that fit - everything is made for a bust 34" or smaller, and she and I are both bigger than that. That led into a little discussion on buying clothes in India (she and FFIL went to India for a month last summer for their 20th anniversary) and how she hadn't found much there that fit without a good bit of tailoring.

We also talked some about food and cooking, and she gave me some tips on freezing frybreads (half-cook them before freezing, she said) and on how to cook without measuring. I learned to bake before I started learning to cook, so I haven't been able to break the habit of measuring everything that goes into the pot.

It will take a bit more doing, but I'm sure with a little more work I'll be able to crack that shell some.

So happy to hear your weekend was a calm one with her and that the two of you interacted positively. As for saris, I am so awful at putting them on. My Mom has always suggested to take a piece of cloth and practice pleating it if you're just sitting around. Pleating and making sure it hangs the right way is very important. I need to learn though how to do it properly. Ughhhhhhh.

I am glad to hear that it went relatively well! It's definitely a start and at least you were able to bond over some shared frustrations. I think as time goes on and she sees how much you love and care for her son she will become more receptive to you and your son as well.

My FI's eldest nephew also has CP and I have noticed that people are the same way, that they don't know how to react or treat him. But he's just a little boy who always has a smile on his face. He's no different from any one else!

It great to hear about your weekend!! Sounds like you guys really broke through some walls.

Saris take time.. I've been wearing them since I wa 17 so I'm really decent at them now. Best thing to do it figure out the pleats as Sonali said!! It's one of the hardest parts. Go from there on the other stuff. Just keep putting it on and off. Try Youtube too.. That's how I got the different styles and ways to do it.

I'm not south asian, but I do love to wear the saris that FI has given me. It took me a while to get it just right, but now I can wear a sari in about 2 minutes. I tie mine just a little different from the video.  After tucking the sari into the petticoat, I bring the pallu over my shoulder and get the length of the pallu where I want it.  I then use the remaining fabric to do the pleats.  I find it to be a little easier.

That was the way one of the videos showed, too; I haven't tried that one yet (been too busy today!) but I plan to as soon asmy preschooler lets me set him down. He's been insistent that I hold him today, which makes sari wrapping difficult, lol.

Ditto Youtube, or go over to a Indian clothes shop and ask them to - how to tie a sari :)
