New to Board

Hi! I'm getting married in Ohio on Oct 29th and am having a hard time figuring out all the details of the wedding (I live in NY but am from Ohio). A few questions:
1. For Makeup: did you use an Indian makeup artist? What was teh cost? What events did you get your makeup done for?
2. Photography: Did you get the Sangeet photographer/videographer?
3. DJ: did you give a list of songs? What were teh most popular songs?

Any advise would be appreciated!!

thanks!!

    Welcome to the boards!

Some of our ladies are from NYC, and can help you with finding a MUA - makeup artist, and a photographer....

It really depends though on your budget and how much you are willing to pay... and the time... I do suggest if you do take a MUA, that you get a trial done to see what will look good on your wedding day!

I had some friends and family take pictures of the sangeet and haldiwaan night instead of a professional photographer, but again if you have a budget, and you want it, go for it!

For the DJ, I did give a list of songs, actually I gave him a mp3 cd of songs mostly because we have a fusion of Indian and Caribbean, so the Caribbean Soca/Calyspo music was lacking.  You can always ask your DJ what songs he/she has as they've done many more weddings (I'd hope) than you planning yours.  If you've got a dancing crowd, like we did, for the Hindi film stuff, we kept the beats going... also had a Tassa / Dhol drummer, which ended up being more fun than the actual music, and kept people coming to the dance floor!

    Hope that helps!

    Welcome and Congrats!

KP gave some good tips, but I'd also suggest asking your photographer for a good makeup artist. Mine came recommended from my photog and they had an established working relationship which was nice. Since I am in NJ, my prices where a little higher than what I would suspect you'd pay in Ohio, but I paid $200 for my MUA to travel to me. It was high, but it was definitely worth it.

I didn't have a sangeet, but for the other at home ceremonies, I just had family photograph the events for me. It depends on what is important to you. Do you want the professional photos of the other events, too? Is your photographer/videographer free on those dates?

We did give the DJ a list of songs we did not want (like line dances and other songs either me or MH do not like) as well as a list of songs we wanted for specific events. It was divided between the ceremony music and reception music like this:

    Ceremony Songs:
    Background music while guests arrive
    Grooms Entrance
    Brides Entrance
Mangal Phera (I am Gujarati and my father wanted a specific song to play)

    Reception:
Parents/Siblings Entrance (or bridal party if you have one)
    Bride & Groom Entrance
    First Dance
    Cake Cutting
    Last Song of the Night

We also gave them a list of songs/artists that we like so that they knew our style and could play songs that we would prefer. I would guess that in the weeks leading up to your wedding your DJ will reach out to you to discuss these things with you.

Welcome to the boards!  Would love to hear about your proposal story and when's the big day!  please share! :)

In regards to the MUA, photo/video, and dj, I agree with the other PPs.  One thing I learned, book the MUA early b/c I had a hard time even 5 months before our wedding!
