Hi Ladies!
I recently went shopping in Delhi in Feb. I know there are thorough reviews already so I'll just give a few tips.
1. Chandni Chowk- Difficult to go on our own, but we did it! Someone needs to create a map of this bazaar and all the great things it holds. Must go to Kenaari Bazaar (basically behind the gurdwara) ask where it is. Here you'll find the best selection of favor bags, wedding stolls, pooja thalis, punjabi chura, etc. All things wedding. They say bargain a lot, but even without bargaining at all the prices were great. ie) large organza bags for favors 10 Rs a piece. Just bargain one shop against the other. And make a list of what you want and how many, otherwise you'll go crazy.
2. South Extension- Ushnakamal Moolchand next to Bengali Sweets--Ashutosh is the wedding lengha designer. He is young, speaks english and will help create your vision! Just picked a lengha I kinda liked, made a ton of custom changes (at no cost) and he's shipping it to me when ready. He sends photos of the progress and is easy to talk to via email. More expensive than others, but extremely reliable. He only took 10% down until I got the finished product---who does that in India?
3. Karol Bagh-- they have a ton of fancy stores, but even the smaller clothing stores have a great selection. I just looked at sarees in this bazaar and found different selection at every location (about 8-10 shops). Great variety, best prices I've seen in quality sarees in all of Delhi, Punjab and Ahmdebad. I didn't look at clothes in Chandni Chownk though for fear of getting ripped off.
4. McDonalds and Haldiram's can always be counted on for a good meal and more importantly clean bathrooms.
5. Take photos of saree blouses you like! The tailors can work magic but not if they can't picture what you are telling them to make!
Good luck! email if you have questions...hsaini@neoucom.edu
