Religion-Less Wedding...

I'm newly engaged, and am starting to plan a very non-traditonal and simple wedding. My fiance and I are not religious in any way, who can we find to marry us? I've heard of people using a friend of family member to marry them, by having them become an ordained minister....anyone have any advice?!

Re: Religion-Less Wedding...

  • Judges and retired judges can also officiate secular weddings.  Once again, you can get recommendations from your local board.

  • The Universal Life Church will ordain anyone, then they can be your officiant. I think having a close friend or family member perform your ceremony is the most personal!

Also, from what I've read, the only thing the officiant ACTUALLY has to ask if "do you...take ... to be your ..." and then some confirmation (e.g. "i do", "yes", etc). The rest is up to you and what makes you feel wonderful for your union.

  • I agree on calling the county clerk. Ours even gave us a list of places people could get ordained. Our friend got ordained through the Universal Life Church. I pretty much wrote the ceremony, H looked at it and said "yep, looks good" and then I told our friend he could add whatever he wanted (within reason).
  • Thank you so much everyone!!! :)
  • A Humanist wedding may also fit your bill, which is a completely non-religious option.
  • My fiance is athiest and wanted a non-religious wedding so we are getting married by a judge, who is a good friend of my parents

  • We're in the same boat. We thought about having one of FI's friends do the honors, but...I want a professional. As with a DJ, you (might) want someone who knows what they're doing, has been there before, can work the crowd, etc. I'll have to check out the judge idea - and here I was ready to settle for a Unitarian Universalist!

I just think it's a cool idea to have a friend/loved one marry you. I've been to so many weddings where all they talk about is God this, and God that...(no offense to anyone)...in my opinion, that day is ALL about the couple, and I want it to stay that way.
    Good luck with your planning!
  • we found a church to marry us.. we wrote our own ceremony that is completely non religious .
