Offbeat Weddings

Theme: 3 questions

I was really curious about this since this is the Offbeat forum. When I have been doing the research for offbeat and budget savvy help, it's usually organized by theme. I totally want to know what you guys are doing/have been doing. I've been reading here about the fishing and camo themes, etc. There are SO MANY fun options out there- it was hard to decide at first.

1) What was/is it? (if you had one, of course)

2) How did you choose the theme? (was it favorite colors, geometry inspired, decided by geography, because of mutual interest, etc)

3) Where and how did you incorporate it?

Please, don't feel obligated to read any of this. I really want to know more about what other couples are doing, but I also figured it wasn't fair to ask without sharing.

1) Our theme is books. The event is titled "Library Lovers." (colors are copper and eggplant purple for an autumn wedding)

2) He's a librarian and I'm a PhD in children's literature; everyone in both of our families are HUGE readers.

3) - I made the invitations as library book inserts with the pocket - think checkout cards. (this was more of a success than I could have ever dreamed. I've already had people call me up from HIS side, track me down while I've been grocery shopping, and stop to talk during one of our local festivals to tell me they loved them. 3 people across the country have said "this is the first wedding invitation that I probably won't throw away.")
-The programs are a Table of Contents with the handmade bookmark favors attached
- Attendant, parents, and "helper" gifts are all hand-made bookend sets (I loved this little idea because it symbolized a completed pairing, it was a practical item for them, and I could personalize it, still, to their tastes)
-I made my scepter bouquet, the boutonnieres, and the mothers' flowers out of Origami book page flowers and copper wire.
-The processional music is "Book of Love" by Magentic Fields though the version is sung by Peter Gabriel (as a side note, we incorporated a LOT of Muppets songs through the ceremony and reception, too. Rainbow Connection as a perfect dance waltz, Movin' Right Along as the recessional, the Muppet show theme for entering the reception. Just because we LOVE him, and Henson did the entire Storyteller series)
-ALL of the decor is from recycled books, encyclopedias, and sheet music that were all free through a library giveaway. (it was very important to me that the decor is recyclable so it doesn't go into the trash)
-The chair backs are decorated with paper chains, and the aisle caps are bookpage cones with color-coordinated cornstalks.
-The ceremony foundation reading is an excerpt on marriage from "Letters" by Rainer Maria Rilke
-The parents are invited to share their favorite book passage about what marriage means to them during the ceremony.
-We added what I call a "Letter Ceremony" where we write letters to each other and add them to an envelope with our vows in it, seal it, and put it in a hollowed out dictionary that I made. This becomes "all the words between us" in the case of any really trying times in our life. We can break this out and remember our promise to each other when all other words fail us.
-The venue is decorated like an in-home library on an autumn evening. We have two ENORMOUS fireplaces. I have made faux books out of cereal boxes, pizza boxes, etc, and oversized bookends for each. We'll add some backlighting and do cascading bookpages for accent.
-I made all of my table runners out of book pages.
-The centerpieces use the recycled encyclopedia books that also helped label the tables with "reading" lanterns and bookpage origami flowers. (We thought about labeling tables by the Dewey Decimal System, or by favorite authors/books)
- We have literary crosswords for people to complete while waiting for food and to get to know each other at the tables. (they'll probably need to ask each other for help! hee.)
-The menu cards (because we are having a portable brick pizza oven for people to have whatever kind they want) are also library book inserts, and we'll have the little library pencils (like the ones at minigolf) on the tables for bothe filling out the menus and for the crosswords.
-The dessert table (the FI and I are making one another's s'mores over a bonfire instead of a traditional cake moment) has the s'mores parts - graham crackers, etc. - in card catalog drawers, and the cupcakes (pumpkin spice) displayed on faux books. There will be cascading bookpage art over and around the table.
-The  gift table has an old-fashioned metal mailbox for cards with magnetic poetry decorating it.
- Instead of a guest "book" (Irony, I know), guests are signing the matting that will go around our favorite wedding picture, which will have a word-cloud of the lyrics from our processional song on it.
- I have handmade all of the Thank You postcards, and had stamps made like a dictionary entry with the word "gratitude" defined and an Ex Libris stamp.

That's the first time I've ever actually written all of those out, and I think I'm forgetting some. I know that many guests really don't care about all of the reasons for little things, and many of the little tie-ins won't be noticed, but the FI and I are just having SO much fun with planning and doing things together. Then again, I'm a researcher by trade and he's a cataloger, so details are important to us!

Looking forward to reading your gems!

Re: Theme: 3 questions

  • Wow! Neat! I'm an elementary teacher who LOVES books so I really appreciated your creativity. I may run the letter ceremony by my FI. Thanks for the ideas!
  • 1) What was/is it? (if you had one, of course) Ours is a red/black/white wedding with a central red rose theme

    2) How did you choose the theme? (was it favorite colors, geometry inspired, decided by geography, because of mutual interest, etc)  Actually the whole wedding is inspired by a tattoo that I have lol, I know not the 'normal' inspiration... lol! I have a memorial tattoo for my father on my back, its an ornate cross with a red rose wrapped around it.

    3) Where and how did you incorporate it?
**Note: Pictures of any of this if anyone is interested are in my bio in my signature**
    - Invitations/Save the Dates all had red roses on them
    - I am carrying a red rose bouquet
    - I have a 'goth inspired' apparently hair fascinator that I fell in love with on Etsy which is a red rose with black and red feathers and a bit of black fishnet
    - Black crinoline under my dress, black sash, red rose jewellery
    - Red and white roses on the end chairs going down the aisle, red and white roses around our gazebo
    - Centrepieces are submerged red roses with black stones around them and then red rose petals sprinkled around them, table numbers have red roses on them
    - Oooo almost forgot one of my fav purchases - red satin shoes with a red rose on the toe lol
    - My cake will have red and black roses on it (I won't know what it looks like until the wedding as a friend/baker is doing it but she did let me know that much lol)
    - I have an offbeat wedding ring set that I LOVE... my engagement ring is a black diamond and my wedding bands are red roses (one above and one below)
    - We had a red rose in our enagement photos, and there are a couple places at the wedding those pictures will be shown
  • I think I'm in love with your ring, too, BMcLeod. hee.

And let's here it for the tattoos! I'm 20% covered in them myself, so it's cool to me that you used that for inspiration..
My motto = I was a queen before the man: I'll be damned if some wedding is going to demote me.
  • Thanks :) I think the combination of my ring and my inspiration was what made me realize when I first came to TK that I'd fit in on this board lol

Any pictures of your tats? How many will be visible on your big day?
I am wearing a backless dress to show off the one that everything is based on :)

Also going on the Sept 1st weekend with my SIL to get a new one on my arm that will be visible.

    Here's the inspiration tat:
  • 1) What was/is it? (if you had one, of course)
We aren't having a theme, per se, but we're getting married on Day of the Dead, so we're incorporating that very lightly.  Our colors are red and black.

    2) How did you choose the theme? (was it favorite colors, geometry inspired, decided by geography, because of mutual interest, etc)
Red is my favorite color, and we both love the fall, and DOTD, so it made sense for us.

    3) Where and how did you incorporate it?
The DOTD stuff is minimal-cake topper, favor, and the ring bearer box.  We're having all red flowers, with the exception of the BM's, who will carry red and cream rose bouquets.  The BM's are wearing black dresses.  The centerpieces are going to be tall red rose/mix of other red flowers.  We will likely have red/black/ivory linens, but we don't know yet how we're going about that.  We're thinking of black/ivory damask table runners.
For the cocktail hour tables we got Morroccan style red glass lanterns.  We plan on having uplighting, likely red.
The wedding cake will have black piping, red roses, and DOTD topper.
    My shoes will be red.
  • 1) What was/is it? (if you had one, of course)
    Our theme is music! :)

    2) How did you choose the theme? (was it favorite colors, geometry inspired, decided by geography, because of mutual interest, etc)
We picked our theme due to our love of music. My fiance has always been a big music nerd. Well, early on in our relationship we bonded through music and I fell in love with both him and his love for music!
    3) Where and how did you incorporate it?
-We're using old records in our centerpieces, as well as cassette tape boxes
-Using band names instead of table numbers (and dinner will be dismissed by a song by the band of each table)
    -Giving out CD favors
-Using music notes on the invitations
-Save the Dates will be designed to look like old music posters

I'm sure there's more, but you get the idea! :)

  • Oh, a DotD cake topper! I love details like that. Where did you find it?

I have been wondering about how themes developed, actually. Was it just an organizing tactic? I mean, having a wedding is practically themtic in itself. But I had a friend who compeltely organized everything around triangles, because her engagement ring was a trillion.

I have to show you this, lcat. It was such a fun upcycling idea!  http://www.etsy.com/listing/96038753/custom-birdcage-veil-fascinator-upcycled?ref=usr_faveitems&atr_uid=12567988

BMcL- I've got a couple of tattoo pictures, but not a lot of good ones.

We haven't settled on one just yet but they are all over the internet!  FI and I were looking at some last night and we LOVED one that is $125, but I can't imagine spending that much on a cake topper.  We can keep it and display it forever, however that just seems like a LOT.  When we get one I'll make sure I post a pic of it!
  • And speaking of tattoos, post-wedding FI and I are likely going to get DOTD themed tattoos together.  Not the same one and no obvious reference to the wedding or each other, but we'll each design something based on that theme.  i"m excited about that!!  He doesn't have any yet, but I have 2 and have been wanting another for some time now.
  • Oh my gosh, meacu1pa, those are adorable!!! Ha! I definitely wouldn't pay $50 for one, but maybe I can make a flower myself out of the music sheets! THANKS!!!

  • sounds nice!

    1) What was/is it? (if you had one, of course)
We didn't plan to have a theme but chose to keep things simple, rustic and fall inspired.
    2) How did you choose the theme? (was it favorite colors, geometry inspired, decided by geography, because of mutual interest, etc)
We both wanted a very simple, civil ceremony but our parents said no.  So, we decided to do a simple wedding because we aren't elaborate or fancy people.  The rustic part just made sense because our reception is in an old barn turned dinner theatre, plus we have a mutual love of nature and outdoors.  Fall is my favourite season and I love the colours, so that made sense to us.
    3) Where and how did you incorporate it?

Our invites were very informal (David and Christina are getting married! Please join us....-insert details-), the church isn't decorated, the tables at the reception are simply decorated, the bouwuets are made up of fall flowers and the centrepieces are sunflowers in jars.  We plan to use mini pumpkins as escort cards and have pumpkin planters outside the venue.  We aren't really decorating the venue except for lots of xmas lights around the celiling beams and probably candles in mason jars.

Autumn/fall really is a self-sustaining theme with so many subtleties and options. Lovely and understated. (And it lets nature decorate for you! :D) Perfectly pumpkinned!

I really wanted photos at the apple orchard/pumpkin patch. The compromise is having an apple cider toast instead of champagne (I'm a recovered alcoholic, so it's a dry event.)

lcat> Totally. I wouldn't spend that on one either. I have a whole bunch of vinyl I'm converting into bookends for gifts. There is a LOT you can do with them! It pretty much just takes a heat source, molding the record, and letting it cool off again. The bookends are simply made with boiling water and a straigh-edge shaper (like a cutting board). I love vinyl cake/cupcake stands and the candy bowls.

Final random note: there is not enough beautiful, meaningful tattoo bodyart in this world. IMO.
