Destination Wedding... Wedding at home? HELP!

My fiance has his heart set on a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic. It's something he has always dreamed about, but the wedding I always dreamed about was a summer wedding. So he brought up a compromise: He says that not every one will be able to come to our destination wedding (probably our parents and close friends), so he wants to have a wedding in the DR in January, then have a "wedding" for everyone back home in June. That way everyone that wants to come to the wedding can, and both of us can have what we want. I like the idea, but is 6 months between the celebrations too long to wait?

  • I wouldn't do a 'wedding' back home, that is usually frowned upon. You can however, and its REALLY common in the world of Destination Weddings, have an At Home Reception. This is like a big party to celebrate the fact that you got married. I have seen everything from backyard bbqs to renting a fancy room at a local hotel. My favourites though are the more down to earth back yard bbqs, they are SO much fun.

There is a Destination Weddings board as well where there will be a  bunch of ladies doing just that, who I know will most definitely be willing to answer your questions! I am having a DW, however opted out of the AHR and invited a ton to the wedding instead.
  • The second wedding might not be a legal wedding, but it's for you and your family! For the guests that couldn't be at the destination wedding, it's their time to feel included by seeing you walk down the aisle in your dress and exchange vows. It's more intimate and meaningful than looking at pictures of the destination wedding they could not attend. Technically, it's a breach of etiquitte, but how does your family and your FI's family feel? Ifthey are supportive, go for it! There will always be people who disapprove if what you are doing, but what is best for you?
